Moving With Betta Sorority?

Anyone have any tips on moving with fish/can help me plan this out? In July, I'm moving about five hours from where I currently am. We'll be driving there, so getting there with the fish(+my crested gecko) should be no problem. However given my situation, it may be up to a month before we get into the actual house with their tanks. (we may have to stay in temporary lodging until a house opens up, I'm moving onto a military base.) How should I house my fish, without their actual tanks, for up to a month?

Current fish: 6 female bettas, 10 rummynose tetras. + a male betta, which I may be able to bring my 10 gallon along for. He's a surprisingly bullet-proof fish, and he should be coming along.

My mom is pushing that I give away my fish and restart when we move, and I'm starting to think it may be a good idea. I have no problem parting with the rummies, but I'm more iffy on my sorority.

However my concern for the sorority, can they really live in a temporary tub together?(Note: they would still have their filter and heater) They may be upset and in a new, sparsely decorated environment they may fight. In that situation I'll be pretty much powerless to stop it, unlike if I had their tank fully planted.

You could take a bunch of betta cups, and drill holes in the bottom so that in the tub, they still are filtered and heated, but they can’t fight!

Ah, I guess I could do that. You think this would be okay for a month+ tho?

The betta cup idea is a good one, only if it was for a week at the most. I would not suggest putting them in a temporary tub for a month. I agree with your mom, it would be best if you gave them away and start all over again. I know it's a tough decision to make, cause we do get attached to our fish. I know you will do the right thing. Good luck.

I would look into mesh breeder boxes in a tub. They would get better water flow and be a little bigger than a cup. But if its going to be months possibly it may be better to either start over or is it possible to leave them were they are now and come back for them later.

So, I have a new idea. It would require getting rid of my tetras and my male, but it fixes the need to have any temporary housing.

I would simply just move my sorority to my 10 gallon, which I could pack into the trunk, and then set up in the temporary lodging and move to my real house when needed. I know it isn't the most ideal size for them, but if I densely plant it they are such a peaceful group I think it would work. This would leave my 36 gallon to either move them back into at a later date, or set back up for new fish whenever I had time.

Hmpf, that could also work. I have two breeder nets/boxes right now, I would just have to pick up a few more. Leaving them here isn't an option unfortunately.

How about bringing 2 10gal tanks or 1 big tank, divide both tanks with mesh dividers and use plants so they won't see the male (also saves u getting multiple filters and heaters) to house both the sorority and the male.

Either that or divide the tub into multiple sections

Why don't you set the 36 gallon up in the temporary lodging? Or get a 20 gallon at Walmart, or the LFS ? It will not be much more work than the other options.

Now I would get other tanks, but to parents, that's a BIG no-no. Same with bringing the 36 gallon along, as they want that moved with the rest of the stuff (we have a crate built for it and everything.)

So basically, my choices are...
-Keeping Kaida (my male) or one female (+one of the girls if I divide with Kaida, I guess)
-Keeping two girls if I divide 10 gallon
-Keep all 6 girls (but this may crash and burn in the 10 gallon)

I may just keep my male, to be completely honest.

A rubbermaid tote could work, its unsightly but offers a lot of room, can use it to hold anything in the meantime - when travelling, can be uses to clothes for example - cheap and for the size, lightweight and easy to move.

At this point, (depending on how pretty the fish are) I would keep the best looking one or the one most bonded to you.
