Moving fish from old tank to new tank

So just brought a new tank 120 liters and I am a little worries about moving my fish from my 40 liter tank in to it. A few concerns is that 1 shop told me I can move them straight in which I know is not true and another told me to wait 1-2 weeks before? Another concern is that I am worried that my fish will get scared or aggressive being moved into another tank that is much larger? please help

 

Good morning and Welcome to Fish Lore!

If your 40L tank is cycled (I see that you are aware of the Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle) then all you have to do is transfer everything over. Add enough of the old tank water, add to new tank, so that you can add the fish and not have to acclimate them all over again. Then fill the tank with freshwater, matching the temperatures between the two and check the pH and get it as close as possible too. Add the new water slowly.

Keep your filter media wet and anything porous wet too such as ornaments, terracotta pots, substrate. This will preserve the beneficial bacteria needed to sustain the tanks cycle.

In the end, it should be just like a large water change Your fish will appreciate the additional swimming space.

The information you were given by the "shops" doesn't seem to be very sound advice.

I just want to vent a little about the advice the fish store gave you. What would waiting 1-2 weeks accomplish? It's not like the water magically changes by just sitting there. And why the abitrary 1-2 weeks? What exactly happens on day 7 (or would it be day 14)? And how would you know what ever "happens" happened on day 7 or if you need to wait for day 14?

It's amazing some of the advice these fish stores give out. And sadly, new aquarists think that the fish store is where all the experts are. At least that's what I thought when starting out.

 

I know what you mean my local fish store is full of mindless idiots that have told me some ridiculous things I like to test them lol.

There is only one guy I trust in a fish store he is really nice and everything he has ever told me or my friends have turned out to be true
