Hi, I'm just wondering what are some of the most colorful freshwater fish species? I want to know what fish have the most colorful patterns or the most contrast to the green of the plants. What types of fish stand out the most?

Thanks, littlefishbubble

Discus. Without question. For the most contrast against the green of plants, pick fish that are the opposite color of green on the color wheel...

Red.

Killies!! They have a spectacular colour range. And a good quality gourami would work. A neon red/flame DG would go nicely.

People might consider this an odd choice considering the "colourful" description... but for nice planted tanks I really like silver fish. They can be really pretty if you get the setup right. I think silver dollars and congo tetras (not that silver, I know) look particularly sexy against dark driftwood and deep green plants. Despite the whole "silver dollars eat plants".

IMO the most colorful fish is the boesmanI rainbow. It displays the colors of the rainbow, in reverse order head to tail. Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
