Mopani wood issue

Purchased some pieces of MopanI wood from Petco. Did the prep work prior to placing in a new 29 gal I am cycling (boiled for approx 1 hour on 5 different occasions). Tannins are all leeched out. After placing in the tank, after about 5 days, it had got this thick semi-translucent growth over all of the smooth side of the wood. Took the photo to my lfs , and they had no clue. Got in touch with ZooMed, who is the distributor. They had never heard of this, and asked me to send them the photo. Am awaiting a reply from them, but in the meantime, thought I would see if anyone here has seen/experienced this, and what the remedy might be. Am a bit concerned this has contaminated my tank, but since I have no idea what this is, I'm not sure what steps to take. I have obviously removed it, and am currently doing the boiling process again.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx

That looks nasty. I've never heard or seen that happen. Is it just one part of the wood?

It only occurred on the smooth side, nothing on the rough side.

What if you bury that side then, or cut it off

That's pretty common with driftwood when it's new to the tank. I remember seeing tons of pictures similar to that but it didn't cover an entire side, it usually was more localized. I believe it's harmless.

It's a fungus that's really common with mopani. Totally harmless. It will go away on its own.

I ordered some spiderwood from ebay and also bought some from my LFS and they both developed what your describing. They are in two different tanks and I just assumed it was bacteria. The wood I got first developed this clear/white-ish cover like yours and after a few days it went away. Now a few days after that and it is back. But my fish and plants and water parameters haven't been affected and I expect it to go away.

Itll go away with time just part of the process. Its not harmful. Some fish, shrimp and snails actually eat it. I wipe it off but itll come back until its ran its course. This has happened to my mopani, oak, and java wood. Itll go away, no worries.

As an update to my previous post, on the spiderwood I first used I see the clear-ish stuff turning brown... I think I'm going to take it out and rinse it off. I'd like to get shrimp to help clean it but my tanks aren't cycled yet and I've never had good luck with them. My nerite snail only stays on the glass.

This occurred on my mopanI wood as well. I read that it's completely normal; it is a fungus; it will go away. It took about 3 weeks to go away in my tank. I tried to suction some out with the gravel vacuum a couple times, but I think my snail and shrimp may have made the largest dent in it.
