My hen is the green and yellow one... the male is the grey... I posted his pix on a budgie forum and a couple of breeders said the male is a slate opaline mutation... the hen is a dominant pied. They have 3 eggs she is sitting on and due for another tonight if she is so inclined...lol If they have a green and yellow baby it will be named Packer to celebrate the packers going to the super bowl...lol. Really hoping to get some little pink gargoyles out of this .

Good afternoon,

How many will she lay and is it always a single egg per day?

They can lay anywhere from one to 10...lol. She laid 2 a couple of months ago... but this is her first try hatching so I have no idea how many she will lay... they lay one every other day and then they hatch one every other day. They usually start sitting after 2-3 eggs are laid but she started as soon as she laid the first one.

5 eggs laid and another due today ... I candled the eggs this am and at least 2 look fertile.. I could see little veins in them. I did not do a proper candling as I have to stand on a chair to reach into the nest box... I have a tiny maglight I shone next to the egg without touching it... I don't want to take any chances of cracking an egg!!

You should've named her Fertile Myrtle.....

I used to live with a guy that bred budgies..... he had over 300 in his basement. I ended up raising one that was actually a cross between lavender and blue. He was just gorgeous and, out of all the babies we'd had, I'd never seen another one that shade of blue/purple! Very handsome, just like your baby boy!

I love it when they hatch and they look so darn ugly! Like all these little squawking featherless mutants..... ya gotta love 'em.

Do you sell the babies?

LOL @ Fertile Myrtle!!! I have never bred before... depending on how many she has I may just give them to friends and family... and keep what I cannot find good homes for. I have seen pix of baby budgies... they look like little pink gargoyles...lol

If she doesn't feed them, you can. Especially if the parents are used to you checking on the eggs. Make sure you have an oral syringe and a hand feeding formula ready before they hatch. I like Kaytee Hand Feeding formula - it is very easy to use. Mix with hot water - let cool until it is body temp - feed. If you need to feed the babies, you can still leave them with mama and daddy. Just take them out one at a time to feed. With six babies, you may need to help feed them anyway. Just to give mama a break. The younger ones will be the ones you will need to watch closest. They tend to get overlooked as the older ones are more demanding.

We have an alien!!!...umm I mean baby!!!

Notice the bulging crop... Momma understood to feed it.. this baby is at the most a couple of hours old... and 1 other egg looked pipped to me. ... it is the egg just to the bottom of the pic... but it is very hard to see.

Thanks for keeping us updated. Wonderful photos! Best wished for them all!

I bred Finches many years ago. It was so neat to see them come out of the nest for the first time. I named them all after different bars of soap.

Thanks again!

Thank you... I am very excited... Daddy bird cannot understand why Momma bird is so protective of the nestbox...lol He tries to stick his head in to see what is chirping and she bonks him... she's like a momma tiger in there!!!

Baby # 2 is here less than 24 hours after it's clutch-mate...next 1 is due in 2 days.

They may hatch closer together than they were laid. It depends on when Momma started sitting tight. The first few eggs usually hatch closer together than the last couple. Any that don't hatch, Momma will probably roll to the side of nest (or even kick out of the nest). Hopefully they will all hatch. Wow - half a dozen baby birdies. That's just cool. Are you going to tame them? If you handle them every day (especially once they open their eyes) they will be easier to tame.

So far we have 4 babies... 1 was due yesterday but never arrived. We have 2 eggs left , but 1 is discolored and from all I have read looks like an addled egg. ( a dud) The last egg is due tomorrow so we shall see if we get anymore babies!!

Here is a video of them!

They are pretty cute. Aren't baby birds some of the weirdest looking creatures around?

Looks like mama and daddy are feeding all of them pretty good. I would watch to make sure the youngest get's it's fair share of food - sometimes the larger ones get most of the food and the younger ones could starve. As long as Momma and Daddy have access to enough food, they should be able to feed all of the babies.

Have you candled the other two eggs? Just because it looks discolored doesn't always mean it is a bad egg. If you can see an air bubble when you candle it, then yes it is probably a bad egg. If it is, it can be taken out and thrown away. Usually the parents will roll the bad eggs off to the side of the nest or kick them out of the nest entirely.

I just candled the last 2 eggs after I posted this... the discolored egg looks like an early dis egg... other one looks full and slightly pinkish inside.. from what I have read it looks good... I think a late dead in shell should look full but darkish or blackish... I have been reading everything I can find!! 1st babies eyes are starting to open...and they are red like I thought they were!! My birds all have free acess to seeds and pellets, also treat stick and millet occasionally... hemp seeds quite often are hand fed to them and every morning they get cooked rices ( 6-7different kinds) , ous cous , pastas, nd lots of grated veggies.. mixed with a molting / breeding supplement, and egg food... they are spoiled...lol. Momma will not allow Daddy to help..if he tries he gets his ears boxed.. she will not accept him feeding her in the nest either , so she comes out 3-4 times a day for 3-5 minutes at a time to feed , drink and poop... she also has a small sprig of millet in her nest that I replace when all gone... thanks for the comps and the advise.

I call them cue-gly... cute/ugly..the oldest 1 is 6 days old today, next is 5 , then 4 and 2. I can't wait for them to start to feather and I can see what they look like!!

well just an hour or so after I candled the eggs , the last good one hatched...so 6 eggs = 5 babies and 1 early dis... not a bad haul... fingers crossed they all stay healthy and get fed... we ended up with 3 red eyed babies and 2 dark eyed ones.

Merged back to back posts.

That is an excellent ratio for new parents. Do you have formula in case you need to supplement feed? Although it sounds like your parents are doing a pretty good job. It will be fun to see what colors they end up. And yes, your birdies are spoiled. But then aren't they supposed to be?

No I don't have any formula , but I do live. 4 minute walk from the pet store so can get some quick... also have read you can use cream of wheat or baby cereal... think that was from you...lol. I was a little worried as Mom hadn't fed the new one for a while after it hatched , but just checked and it has a good full crop... . Baby #2 has dark eyes and I can see down coming in on him that looks kind darkish... #1 ia a red eye and cannot see any down sprouting... most likely as it is probably the same color as the little fuzz on it already... and yes they are supposed to be spoiled!!

Sounds like you have everything in hand. Good for you ! ! ! Don't forget to take lots and lots of pictures!

And yes, cream of wheat or baby rice cereal are great for a temporary substitute. If you have to use them, make sure to add some hard boiled egg yolk for the extra protein that the baby birds will need.
