molly fry will survive anything

Something funny happened the other day. I was doing quite massive tank maintenance, so took most of the deco out. I tend to just put the dripping stuff on a plastic bag on the floor. When I was done, I put the deco back in and didnt' think more of it. Turns out that one of the really young molly fry had hitched a ride on the decor, and had dropped in one of the folds of the plastic bag. The next day, when I went to tidy away the plastic bag, I saw something squirming. Ewwww. It was that little fry. I dropped him back in the water and he just happily swam away.

My uncle had a cory cat that was accidentally left in a plastic bag for three days before he found it. He's now happily swimming round in my tank. I guess as long as their gills are wet, the tougher ones should be okay

 

today one of the mahachaI betta fry jumped and got stuck on the side from water tension.. he was fine though when we saw him and put him back in the water.

 

Isnt it funny how that works! and did you ever notice that sometimes the fish you treat with the softest kid gloves just croak for no apparent reason! I hate that!

 

yea, i'm starting to get some theories about bettas and if perhaps too much is as hard on them as too little.. or perhaps we're just looking at the sad results of years of bad breeding practices in bettas and many other fish.

 

The same type thing happened with 2 of my tanks... One tank I cycled quickly and easily, without instance just by putting water, conditioner and fish in it... within a month it was cycled. The other tank that I tried to text-book cycle and carefully monitored daily took almost 3.5 months to cycle ... ahhhhhhhhhh

we hear you there. we cycled 2 tanks.. one we needed asap, the other there was no hurry on.. guess which one took 2x as long to cycle?

 

Makes me wonder why we ever do water changes, LOL. I mean, if they're happy in a tiny bit of water for 3 days.

Yeah, I was wondering about that the other day. If a bit of nitrates was not better for a betta than the weekly cleaning disturbance.

ours seem used to the weekly cleaning now. mostly they get in the way rather than seem stressed now, they always are wanting to see what i'm doing. Our nitrates are fine, we just clean the tank weekly to keep it clean and not have any peas, etc rotting away in the marbles.
