Molly diet

HI all!!
I read somewhere that mollies need some green in their diets and it was also mentioned that it was OK to give them some iceberg lettuce. Does anyone know if that's true? Thanks!!!!

Try it and see certainly won't hurt. They may take veggie flakes more readily.I give all my live bearers a meal of veggie flakes or krlp flakes every day.

Hi,
My mollies did nibble a bit on the iceberg lettuce. I cut them into very little pieces. I ended up getting spirulina to aid their vegetarian diet. They went much better then lettuce

My mollies like to nibble on cucumber, romaine lettuce (blanched or frozen and thawed) zuccini, and the occasional peeled pea (frozen, thawed, skin taken off). One thing that they LOVE is what my LFS called a "Frill Plant". These are quite attractive plants, so I bought several for my tank....twice now. My mollies keep eating them .

okay, I guess this is a dumb question but do I serve the veggies uncooked or fresh?! just wondering before I actually pop em in the tank and then realize I did something wrong... =/

Cucumber and zuzzhinI uncooked. You can blancj spinach and romaine lettuce by placing it in boiling water for just a little while...like a few seconds. This makes it softer to eat. Please be sure to only serve small amounts and do not let the veggies lay around the tank, as they will start to well......rot. I remover mine after a couple of hours.

I give my mollies a tropical balanced flake. I also give one cube of tubifex a day. On occasion I will give brine, of which I was told they will eat, however, mine do not take much to it so I stopped. I am soon going to introduce them to the veggie/algae waffers.

My mollies certainly like the green flakes more than the red ones. At the beginning, they would only spit out the red ones.

So, I have 3 gold dust mollies. They always stay at the mid-bottom level of my tank. When I feed my fish, all 3 of my mollies don't go up to the top to eat the flakes, they just stay at the mid-bottom level. What should I do?

They rarely pick at the sand...................

Are they not eating at all or are they waiting for the food to fall?

They're just swimming at the mid-bottom level, don't know if they're waiting for the food to fall.

These aren't new additions, so stress couldn't be a cause.

What other fish are in the tank? What are the water parameters? Tank size?

My only guess is they could be outcompeted for food.... Or maybe something in the tank is just stressing them out. Do they swim around normally or do they hide a lot?

They swim around normally, and they rarely hide.

I have buenos aires tetra, zebra danio, and also panda cories. The tetras eat very fast, though there is always some leftover flakes which the zebra danios chomp down, but the mollies don't go to the top.

Ammonia, 0. Nitrite, 0. Nitrate is a bit high (40-80), so Matrix is coming to me from Amazon.

Hm... When did the mollies stop going after food? Did they EVER go after food? How long have you had them?

Water parameters seem alright, so I don't think that's the problem.

The mollies are probably afraid of the buenos aires. The latter are aggressive fish. I love them in with Cichlids, but they will dominate mollies, especially if the tank is less than 3 feet across the front. In small tanks, they get bored and can give tank mates a hard time.

Have you tried food variety? Maybe they just aren't keen on the current one?

Could you dump some live daphnia in there, see what happens?

They don't go after the food, they just continue to swim at the mid-bottom level even when feeding.

I had them since July 2016, and they stopped eating about two weeks ago. Before the last two weeks, they came to the top and ate fine even when the Buenos Aires are eating.

I haven't had a molly before, but I've read that they require more vegetation in their diet. Should I supplement with blanched vegetables or will a diet on regular community mix be fine? Should I worry about too high protein % if I feed my fish occasional microworm cultures or do molly have less of a predatory instinct (and therefore hunt less worms than other fish)?

Vegetation is good in any fish's diet (except if their pure carnivores).
You could feed the molly community mix but remember to give vegetables once in a while.

So the vegetable matter in regular food isn't enough then? I'll supplement, thanks

It's enough, but extra vegetables is always good once in awhile.

So have you noticed any difference in food/general aggression with mollies? I figured they might be less inclined to chase and hunt since they lean more towards herbivorous habits than, say, danios.

No really. In my experience, all they do is eat, poop and spawn lol.

And that's why I have no intention to keep them in the future lol.
