Molly babies seem to be dumb

In my tank I have quite a lot of fish. 5 golden barbs, 3 rosy barbs, 1 torpedo barb, 2 rainbow fish, 6 rummy nose and 4 mollies. One of my mollies is a 3 month old baby of one of the others. 2 days ago, one of the white females gave birth to 16 fry. Since then the number has dropped to 12 and all the fry seem to be on the top, in full view of every other fish. The 3 month old was the only surviving fry and she hid most of the time. I read somewhere that all the fry should hide or they'll get eaten. So here's my question, Have I got dumb baby mollies?

Also, the mother isn't behaving right. She keeps going to the bottom for a few minutes and then coming to the top with her fin down, meaning she's unhappy(I think) Is there a reason for her doing this?

Can anyone help please?

How to you tell the gender of the fry?

There is a nice post on that that is probably just below this one. She might be having complications from labor. I've heard of the twelve fry range but sixteen to me is phenomenal. I would recommend you get java moss. It looks great in
/most/ tanks. It's extremely great for fry.

We are down to 7 fry now, but they could be hiding somewhere else. I'll get that java moss. It might help. Polka dot was the only surviving member of her siblings so maybe I'll get one or two survive of this lot

You can. It's fairly hard, and I've never tried, but I've seen multiple articles on it.

Update. I have 9 fry, possibly more. I have got a lot of java moss for them to hide in and they have become more adventurous. I have been feeding them brine shrimp, daphnia, crushed flake food and pellets. They seem to be nudging each other, like competitive towards each other. Is this normal?

All fish do that. They are greedy by nature

Update!
My 7 babies are 2 and a bit months old now and I have named them Cookie, Charcoal, Starlight, Leo, Chocolate chip, Crystal and Peaches.
I now have another lot now: 4/5 of them, about 2 weeks old.

Today It looks like my 5 month old is going into labour. Shes wriggling at the top. I think that's the sign that she's about to have them
