Missing Fish Please Help!

Yesterday afternoon I moved 3 male guppy into my main tank from quarantine. It is a 55 gal and had 3 existing guppy. Which brought me to a total of 6 male guppy. Last night I fed them they all seemed happy. This morning I couldn’t find one, thought he may be sleeping in some decor. This afternoon I came home I still couldn’t see him. I have thoroughly checked the tank and cannot find him this is what I did:

Took all decor out
Moved substrate around to see if he was buried
Took apart canister filter

Cannot find him

He was healthy and eating last night.

Where else could he be? I understand if he’s missing this long he’s probably dead. This makes me very sad but if I can’t find his dead body he will ammonia spike my tank! What if I never find him will the dead body kill my tank?

Unfortunately I have just found the poor little guy dead on the floor I have a lid on my tank but there’s cutouts in the glass where the heater cord and spray bar go in and he must have got out there.

Poor fellow just made it into the big beautiful 55 gal with his friends, he could’ve had a long enjoyable life. I’m so sad he was so healthy last night and happy.

RIP Candle

Sorry for your loss Emma, just really unlucky for that to happen. I covered the cutouts on my tank with a bit of gauze, although I don't have any top level fish - better to be safe though.

RIP poor Candle!

Thanks for your words, I think I will cover the cutouts as well just to be safe.

Yes Guppies do tend to be more top dwellers, so best to be safe! My issue is heat of the water - up here in North Queensland it's hot most of year, so have to run a desk fan pointing at the water to keep it below 27c!

I imagine it would be hot!

Yes even here in NSW its so hot at the moment, first time the heat has messed with my tank temp though is last week. I've managed to keep the temp down at 26.5 but that's with water changes with slightly cooler water and fans running. I aI'm to keep tank at 25... I only imagine its going to get worse as summer comes in

Yeah, it's a problem trying to keep the water temps down! Practically impossible to keep any cold water fish - maybe in Southern Tassie you might be able to get away with it, but that's all!

All the fish I have are warmer water fish, so they can handle temps of around 28C or so. If I didn't run the fan, I think my tank would be pushing 30 ☹

Yeah luckily my fish interests aren't cold water! I've always wondered do all these people with fancy goldfish in Australia have chillers or something? They're so expensive to buy. Hopefully my guppy don't mind the temperature up a couple of degrees during the hot times, it won't be permanent so from what I've read they should be okay if it hits 27-27.5 in the tank for a while as long as it isn't forever

My temp is currently running close to 28C, but I did just do a water change - the water out of the tap is a bit hot. The fan gets it down a bit to around 26.5 or so. Looks like the fan will be running for the next 6-7 months at least. Suffice to say I don't need the heater. Probably won't need it in winter either.

The truth is, I don't think many people keep cold water fish at their proper temp. So of course their life spans are greatly reduced. The pet stores here all have them in tanks at 28c, so they're already taken a bit of a before you buy them
