Minimum tank size for breeding Convicts?

Hey everyone.

Earlier today, while browsing the internet for more information about my convicts, I read that they could comfortably breed in a tank 24"x12"x12". Is this true? If not, what size tank do they need?

Thanks.

That tank would be around 15 gallons. IMO they need a minimum of 20 to breed comfortably. They would breed in a 15g, I just don't think it would be very safe in case one of the fish turns on their mate.

I bought a proven pair - they spawned in a 29 and he turned on her. So, it really depends on the fish, as well as what your goals are. You may need to divide the tank at some point

Jaysee: In the current tank, a 46 Gallon bowfront, I've seen no aggression between the two, but I doubted I'd have any. I didn't intend to breed them, but I was told the males would fight with other males, and the females would fight with other females. The fry will likely be given away or fed to other fish.

Hahaha, and they fight with each other too.

I would think you wouldn't have any serious issues in a tank that big. What I meant by goals was whether it would be acceptable to have the tank divided. I could have done that with the 29 but I didn't want to, so I got rid of them. I still have a female from that spawn though

I wouldnt do it in less then a 40 gallon, I have cutterI which are supposed to be less aggressive and the male turns on the female and hurts her, and this is in a 20 gallon so I definently would do convicts in a 20.
