I would say that 20 gallons for 1 would be the bare minimum. They're fairly hefty fish when adults and need room to turn around so personally I would choose a 40, maybe a breeder style if I got another. Goldfish are messy so you also have to remember that the larger the volume the fewer water changes you'll need to do.

I don't know where you read 1 gallon but that's just silly.

HI there! It's a very difficult question to answer because there's a lot of conflicting information everywhere from Fishkeeper to Fishkeeper.

Typically, the size people are told are fine for FANCY Goldfish are 20 Gallons for the first fish and 10 for the rest WITH Overfiltration so, if your tank is a 40 gallon it should have way more than 400 GPH in terms of filtration.

Another rule that people are told is 20 gallons per fish, that also works too but overfiltration is REQUIRED as well in ANY scenario involving Goldfish, they're very messy fish.

Now as for Commons/Comets/Single Tails, those do best in Ponds and they're NOT recommended for Aquariums as they get up to a foot long or even bigger and you could be severely reducing their life-span by keeping them in a tiny aquarium.

Also, Goldfish DO NOT grow to the size of the tank, they will get stunted (stop growing early) and get Organ failure and die way too early, they're supposed to live 20 or more years.

some people say 1 gallon

There's a word for those kinds of people. I won't say it though, for fear of being banned from the forum.

Welcome!

No reason why you couldn't keep single in a 20. You need to.keep water parameters in check and with a fish that carries such a hefty bioload it just makes more sense to up.the water volume and enjoy the tank. A 55 gal would be my go to if I were to keep them. They can be had brand new.for $55, slap 2 aquaclear 70 on there and your styling

A lot of the chain stores list goldfish at 30+ gallons for a minimum tank size. Most people on here will say something close to that. Goldfish are also social, so they need another goldfish with them.

I have 2 fancy's in a 100G, they use every inch. I would go for a minimum of 40 gallons, bigger is better though I also reccommend, if you get a 40, to get two goldies(both fancy) as goldies are very social

Welcome to fishlore!!
