10 Gallon Tank Midna's Money Drain Betta Tank

hey all! I recently started up a 10 gallon tank for a new betta. it's been a few years since i've had a betta (the last one was a red and aquamarine crowntail I had in college, living in less than a half gallon container and got bad fin & body rot, rip alejandro), and now thanks to this forum, i'm (hopefully) much more knowledgeable about them, even though i've been keeping bettas (in poor conditions) since I was a kid. my last aquatic pet stunt was actually african dwarf frogs, which I also started in college, but they died a couple months ago and I didn't feel ready to try them again because pet store adfs nowadays are notoriously awful. I was looking at everyone's beautiful bettas on fishlore and couldn't resist getting another.

this is my first serious attempt at a planted tank. i'm doing a fish-in cycle (shhh. I know.) with tetra safestart plus. here's to hoping it works and nothing dies. I plan on getting a pair of nerite snails, a tiger and a zebra, once the tank is established. I would also like to try either cherry or ghost shrimp someday, but we'll see what my betta thinks.

psa: I call it a "money drain" tank because I spent over $200 setting the thing up and it's of course a running total, lol. edit: now it's $400+ lololol

here are the deets:

date started: july 3, 2018 (7/3/18)
tank: 10 gallon aqueon standard glass rectangle
inhabitants: male double tail plakat betta, prince sidon; tiger nerite snail, shancai; zebra nerite snail, daoming si; ghost shrimp, edgar the poe
plants: java fern, red java fern, anubias frazeri, anubias barterI nana (?), anubias nana petite, anubias coffeefolia, cryptocoryne wendtiI green, cryptocoryne walkerI lutea, rosette sword, water sprite, creeping charlie, brazilian pennywort, hydrocotyle tripartita japan, hygrophila corymbosa, amazon frogbit
lighting: beamswork ea full spectrum led (low/med light), runs about 6-7 hours a day
filter: aquaneat large double sponge filter, top fin silentstream 10 power filter (hob)
substrate: seachem flourite black (1 inch) capped with 1.5 inches of black diamond blasting sand
conditioner: seachem prime, apI master test kit
ferts: nilocg thrive+ dosed twice a week, seachem flourish root tabs
ph: 7.4 - 7.6
temp: 81° fahrenheit

first, let me talk about the fish, because who cares about all that other stuff, lol.

originally I wanted a big, beautiful betta. I love dumbo ears and rosetails. I thought I wouldn't be satisfied unless I had a dumbo. those fins!!!! I was also really attached to white and platinum bettas. I didn't want a red or blue betta or a combination of the two because they're so common. but then I started to like plakats, too.

this little guy caught my eye at petco because he was just. so. tiny! like, he was smaller than all the others. but he had decent fins. short, but not as short as a lot of plakats i've seen. he looked like a miniature betta. but I still preferred other bettas over him. I just liked how petite he was.

when I first saw him in the beginning of june, he looked like this:
18-06-06-15-54-20-402_deco(2).jpg

a couple weeks later I went back to petco and took a photo of him again, not realizing he was the same betta i'd seen before:

18-07-02-14-27-48-178_deco.jpg

Dch48 and CanadianFishFan pointed out that he looked unique and sort of like a cichlid (inbreeding, lol). them mentioning him brought my attention to the betta and I slowly grew more attached to him.

another petco visit:

18-07-04-14-23-42-770_deco.jpg

I scoured local pet and fish stores several times to see all their stock. I went to 8 stores total lol. still, I felt like it would be wrong not to get this betta, even if he wasn't anything like i'd had in mind. once my tank was finally set up and ready to go on 7/8/18, I went to petsmart just to check if they had any irresistible bettas in case the little one had already been bought. nope, cruddy bettas lol. I went to petco and almost didn't see him. I spotted him on the top shelf and noticed immediately that he had lost all the blue colour on his body in just a week he was grey/brown and his red fins had faded. he had some serious stress stripes. he still looked healthy and relatively active, though, so I figured he'd eventually colour up again once he settled into his new environment.

I knew he'd been there for over a month. I figure he might have been a baby betta, and once he got bigger, they switched him over to the "adult" section. that would explain why he's so small. if you compare the photos, he's definitely still growing, so he's a youngin'.

20180708_154954.jpg

I got him home, acclimated him for about 45 minutes, dumped the whole big bottle of tss+ in, and hoped for the best. it took a while to get him netted, he was zooming around the cup everywhere, but I finally got him into the tank. he swam to the corner in alarm and got kinda stuck between the hornwort and the side of the tank. he stayed like that for over 5 minutes, breathing like he'd just swam a marathon. poor guy was super stressed and overexerted.

I decided to leave him alone and hoped he didn't cork it within the next hour. I came back maybe 15 minutes later, thrilled to see him exploring his new tank. he is SO tiny in a 10 gallon!!!! I was thinking the 10 gallon would look too small, but he just looks ridiculous in it, lol. he happily swam around and explored every inch of his tank, inspecting all the plants and his floating betta log.

about two hours later I noticed him picking at the loose roots and hornwort needles (ugh) on the substrate and driftwood and trying to eat them. he was also eating bubbles lol. I didn't think he'd eat for the first day or so, but I decided to try a pellet on him, since he seemed hungry. I soaked a new life spectrum betta colour enhancer pellet in water, hoping to start early on getting his colour back. he put it in his mouth and spit it out like 6 times before it was just disintegrated on the floor and none of it had been swallowed. naughty boy :/

so I tried fluval bug bites instead. they're tinier and I didn't soak them first. he gobbled them all up. silly goober. I only gave him a few because I don't want any bloating trouble. eventually he started resting on the driftwood and in the plants, exhausted after such a big and stressful day. before that, though, he'd follow my finger around, my face, and the sound of my voice. very cute!

I named him prince sidon (see-dohn [japanese pronunciation] or sai-din, like poseidon) after the zora (basically a fish/shark man) prince in the legend of zelda: breath of the wild, continuing the zelda naming theme for my aquatic pets. I think he looks like a little shark!

i'm hoping he'll stay with me a long time. i'm going to strive to take good care of him. i'm relieved he's relatively young too, which hopefully means he'll end up living longer.

sorry about the freaking NOVEL!!!!! gosh. I'll post more photos and videos as I get them. I didn't want to stress him out more today. plus he's still pretty dull-looking lol. my blue and red lights give him colour if he goes under them though, bless.

It looks gorgeous! Excellent scape.

As for a fish-in cycle with a single betta in a 10 gallon, that's not too bad. It's a good volume of water for a single fish. There shouldn't be any terrible spikes as long as you stay on top of the water changes.

EDIT:

I just read the updated second post! So glad you picked up this little guy! After seeing the same fish sit there at the store for a month it's tough to leave them there. That's how I ended up with one of my females. I'm sure he's going to love that 10 gallon tank! And I'm glad to hear he seems to be adjusting well. Keep us posted!

thanks you guys! it's just stuff thrown around willy-nilly. i'd love an aquascape but i'm not gonna attempt that yet lol. might get rid of the pots sometime in the future if he doesn't use them and replace them with some cool stones or petrified wood. I also have a giant branch of manzanita or something similar, but i'm not sure what to do with it yet. it needs to be prepped first.

my stupid tap water has 1ppm of ammonia. I could use filtered water for water changes, or just add prime every 48 hours to detoxify it. but i'm concerned the tank will never cycle if there's not enough ammonia. before I put the fish in, it was down to .25ppm ammonia and .25ppm nitrites. either the ammonia was going away naturally (does it even do that without bb) or getting sucked up by the hornwort. who knows what the giant bottle of tss+ did to my ammonia levels, haha.

i'm in a bit of a limbo because i'm still not totally sure how often I should do water changes while the tank's cycling. I don't want to mess up the tss but I don't want my fish to like, die. the ferts i'm dosing also require weekly water changes. zoinks.

Omg that's one spoiled betta. Wish I could do that, I was going to give a 5 gallon to one betta but then divided it because I unexpectedly received another. The original betta that was going in the 5 never has been in there yet until I got the second, then had to build a divider. Then they both went in at the same time. My profile pic.

Post a picture of him when he gets used to the tank! I want to see his colours.

Same here, my family thinks I'm dumb and have no sense of money. I spent $160 on mine. My halfmoon's name is Gillbert and he was pretty old when I bought him and now he's riddled with tumors, but still living life!

so I got really bothered by all the hornwort needles littering my tank and took out all of the floating hornwort. I left the two long "planted" stems in front of the filter because they don't seem to be shedding as much. I liked the look of the gloating hornwort but those needles!!!!!! man. once the tank's done cycling, I might get rid of the hornwort. I think it was helping suck up some of the ammonia but idk.

since I wanted to get rid of some of the needles, at least in the front part of my tank, I ended up using my gravel vacuum. I only got maybe like 15% haha. anyway, that resulted in a 30% water change. I probably shouldn't have done a wc a day after adding tss+ but what's done is done. I'll save the layer of needles in the back of the tank for whenever I do another wc.

my betta is always hanging out at the front of the tank at the top, looking for food... I fed him some more bug bites in the afternoon, then tried to feed him frozen daphnia at night. that was a fail. the daphnia is wayyyyyy too tiny and he didn't notice them. so now I have a ton of daphnia that my betta isn't gonna eat rip. I then tried frozen tubifex worms, which are also super tiny, but he figured out they were food and ate them all.

I also got my aquascaping tools set in from amazon today, so during the wc I cut off any melting crypt leaves and stems I could find. I don't think sidon's too happy about me getting rid of some of his plants. I also found a giant poop, omg. I can't believe such a little fish would take such a big dump??? I couldn't in good conscience leave it, so I got rid of it. is it ideal to leave fish poop sitting around for the plants to utilize or nah.

he's a baldy... lol. I noticed a couple small nicks/tears in his bottom tail fin and skirt. the only thing that could do it is the driftwood, but I sanded a lot of the problem areas down before I put it in there and his fins are pretty small... hmph. I hope he doesn't tear them up more or I'll have to take the driftwood out and do some alterations on it.

today I caught him trying to eat some sand, I think?? lol. he spit it out but is still trying to eat the hornwort needles. :/ I fed him more bug bites in the morning so he wouldn't try to eat something ridiculous. at night I tried thawing out some baby brine shrimp, but they were even smaller than the daphnia. yikes... there goes those two foods. I fed him spirulina brine shrimp instead, which he ate willingly (minus the little pieces of spirulina floating around).

i'm trying to hold off on testing my water because of the tss+. I might test it tomorrow and see what the readings are.

it's been one week since I finished adding plants and began dosing ferts.

20180713_193238.jpg

- I think i've settled on a schedule: dose ferts on tuesday and saturday, 40-50% water changes on fridays (for now), and sidon gets to fast on friday. today is friday and he's very upset.

- I have the lights on about 7 hours a day. i'm not sure if this is too long because most of my plants are low light. a few leaves and stems of the crypts have melted, which was expected. i've been snipping them every other day. the anubias has some little holes in it and one leaf has started to dissolve at the edge. idk if it's adjusting too or if it's a deficiency or a lighting problem. my lone frogbit grew a very long root and had a baby. the hornwort has grown a bit, or is trying to stand up straighter at the top, and most of the crypts have new shoots coming up. the java ferns have a few little brown spots but look all right. the windelov, however, looks nasty. I think I left it out of the water for too long while I was trying to attach it to a rock. it has a lot of brown spots. I read this is normal for most windelovs (especially the tubed ones from petwhatever) when adjusting to a new tank. I don't know if I should just leave it or cut the leaves off and see if they grow back nicer.

20180713_193533.jpg

20180713_193556.jpg

20180713_193632.jpg

- did a 50% water change today because nitrates were getting kinda high (I couldn't tell the actual amount tho) and I vacuumed up most of the needles. I also took out the driftwood and filed down all the edges so hopefully the prince won't tear his fins up anymore

- test kit readings have been good so far: less than .25 ammonia, consistently 0 (it was a tiny bit green after the wc today, but my tap has 1ppm ammonia), 0 nitrites, and 5 - 40 nitrates. I really can't tell the difference between 10 - 20 and 40 - 80 nitrates on the chart. is this intential or a misprint? there's no variation between the colours that I can see.

20180713_195748.jpg

i'm still afraid there might not be enough ammonia to cycle the tank though. idk

- sidon loves frozen mysis shrimp soaked in fresh chopped garlic. he spits out the carapaces though so i'm just going to feed him the tails. I'll try to feed him daphnia and baby brine shrimp again but I don't know if he's gonna eat it.

- I finally got my little boy to flare today!!!! ♡ it took him a while to realize the mirror was an Enemy. he didn't do it for very long, so no pics or videos. today is fast day but I gave him one bug bite as a treat for being such a Good Boy.

- I seem to be getting a lot of nitrates in my tank, which makes me think i'm using too much ferts or not enough water changes. or I need more plants lol.

- blah blah blah plants: I think i'm going to cut the brown leaves off of my java fern windelov and see if new leaves will grow. I'll probably shove it in the back and replace it with a rosette sword. might also get rid of the terra cotta pots. I got rid of the hornwort except for about 6 inches that have grown since I got it. I let it float. my frogbit's long roots got pulled off somehow :/ might have been my filter, might have been sidon throwing a tantrum.

i'm probably going to get either bacopa or anacharis to hide the filter in the front. not sure where to get anacharis though, every lfs and pet store either doesn't have it or it's all dead. can't order anything online when it's this hot. I want to get some vals or rotala rotundifolia green for the background, plus maybe water wisteria.

I have questions! You must answer me! Yeah, whatever. But seriously I took advantage of PetCo's recent DPG sale (well really I think they took advantage of me but that's another story...ahem...back on track...) So, I got tanks but I need hoods and lights now! My oldest Betta, Carlos, has been in his little "starter" tank for about 6 months and it's time to move him to a bigger home. I've got gravel and filter but holy Sasquatch do these retailers want an arm and a leg for hoods! What are you using? I'd say money is no object but no, money is an object. Thanks in advance!

what size are the tanks and what kind of lighting are you looking for? I have an aqueon versa top for mine and separate lights that I bought online (amazon) for growing plants. it was cheaper than getting something like a deluxe hood, where the lights wouldn't be good for growing plants. I got my versa top from petco, but I saw it for less at other stores. it's too much money on amazon. I think the cheapest I saw it for was at pet supplies plus (unfortunately my local one didn't have it in stock and said they couldn't order the 20" even though it was shown in stock at other stores...) https://www.petsuppliesplus.com/shopping/Aqueon-Aquarium-Hood-Versa-Top/4402

10 gallon. Most of the tops with a light looked to be cheaply made even if the prices didn't reflect that (no surprise there). I looked at a simple glass top and even those are ~$22 and that's before you stick a light on top of one. Any light would do, I'm not growing for one of the cartels, I promise! But even then, a decent LED (one that isn't 10" and actually covers the length of the tank) is ~$30. So I'm looking at $50+ to cover my $10 tank! Arghh!

I feel you :/ I spent the most on my lid + light and plants. $18 for the lid, $27 for the light. you could go to home depot or lowe's and get plexiglass or mesh or something cut for the size of your tank for cheaper. and then just use a lamp or floodlight for the light. clip-on lights will also work fine (I don't know if they fit rimmed tanks though). your light doesn't necessarily need to be the same length of the tank.

here's a slimmer, cheaper model of my current light's brand for less than 20 bucks:

BeamsWork ET Series 0.50W LED Aquarium Light Freshwater Timer Ready (50cm - 18")

I recommend making a new thread for inexpensive hood and lighting suggestions if you haven't already

Eh, I'm new here and I've noticed the mods can be quick with the hammer if the conversation strays off from the stated topic of discussion as listed in the thread title. Thread police and all that. Thought you might be saving me some headaches. So I looked at the Beamworks light you linked to and saw that it is a 10K which is pretty intense, more like something I think would be used on a reef. My understanding of plant lights is they need to be more in the 5K-7K range. Anywho.. Where did you get your lid from? I thought I'd found one that was reasonable and then saw shipping was another $8 and so they aren't any cheaper than anywhere else I looked. Grrr... haha, hep me! Hep me!

i've seen members' tanks threads with pages in the double digits that's mostly conversation, so I think it's fine I got mine from petco for $18. i've seen them at petsmart, but not as frequently. is there a pet supplies plus around you? a pet supermarket? it'll help if you have coupons. or wait until a pet store has a sale on fish supplies. some stores will price match with certain online prices or competitor ads. i'm sure most lfs carry these lids too. then there's always craigslist or facebook marketplace. ebay might have cheaper options too!

yeah, my beamswork light has 10000k lights. I figured since it's advertised as full spectrum it'd be okay. I'll probably upgrade it to something different in the future or lessen the amount of light every day.

here's my model but in 6500k for 23 bucks (I should have gotten this lol):

The 10K is probably just fine, they're just not quite as bright for the wattage. They have more of a color spectrum which is GOOD for plants you just don't get the depth penetration unless you get a higher wattage unit. I think it's called the PAR rating when talking about aquarium lights. Anyway, all I have nearby is the 2 P stores and one LFS that carries high dollar stuff and sadly has the markup that a small business has to have to keep their doors open. It's hard for them to compete on price with the megalomarts. I need to get Carlos hooked up though, I can't have him living in a big ranch style house now and still using candles for lighting.

edited to add: I saw some DIY stuff on making a plexiglass cover, I might look into that.

tank as of yesterday:

annnd some pics of sidon:

20180725_213337.jpg

- the other day I woke up to find that he had injured himself again :/ you can kinda see it in the 3rd pic. he must have scraped himself on something because a one or two of his scales were coming off. it almost looked like dead skin. it fell off later and there doesn't seem to be any damage.

- I removed the pots and replaced them with a rosette sword. noticed a teeny baby java fern on my big java fern. I cut off all the nasty leaves on the windelov and shoved it into the back corner so it can regrow.

- a lot of the plants close to the light are getting brown and green algae whoops. might need to get a snail soon. I know some snails won't eat certain algae though. I might start out with a horned nerite or two; I don't think the bigger nerites go on the plants. I could put a couple of my pond snails in but they're so tiny and i'm afraid of a pond snail infestation. there are also diatoms hanging out in the tank.

- I noticed a couple of tiny worms on the glass. sidon then swam up and ate one right off the glass lol

- when sidon does sleep (which isn't often), he sleeps like the dead! last night, after the lights had been off for a while, I caught him sleeping against the glass at the top of the tank, right in the front. he almost looked dead or sick, so I came up to the glass and talked to him. usually that makes him move, but there was no response. tapped lightly on the glass. nothing. turned on the light in the room. nope. lifted the lid. still no response. finally I poked him with my pinky finger and he woke up and moved haha. crazy little guy.

- I made indian almond leaf tea today! boiled some minI catappa leaves and now i'm waiting for it to cool before putting any in his tank. i'd loooove to make his tank a dark reddish brown like the tea, but i'd probably have to use a lot.

thank you!! he really isn't that blue in regular lighting. I always enhance my photos to make him look better LOL I cheat his fins are pretty red though.

thank you! in the first photo on the first post, or my most recent photo of the tank? in the first photo I posted, it was hornwort on the far right. I ended up taking it out because it was shedding needles everywhere. if you mean the most recent photo, the plant that I replaced the terra cotta pots with (right behind the ammonite fossil) is a rosette sword, echinodorus parviflorus.

yeah I do, it's a marina background. it was a pain in the butt to get on too. x_x;

I was looking at the first photo so it was hornwort. Too bad about it shedding. I'm embarrassed to take any pics of Carlos' new home yet, it's just a tank with the icky blue gravel, no backdrop and I made his filter and light from the tiny tank work. Being that I still have another 10 gallon PCo special sitting around I may work on THAT tank as his permanent home. He can slum around in the current one for a while I guess. You've given me some inspiration on what I could do and so I can play around without tearing into his home every time I have a thought. Thanks!

what size are the tanks and what kind of lighting are you looking for?

Hey. I bought two versatops from drs foster and smith for 29.00 with free shipping. Got them in 3 days too.

I feel like I'm in bed with the devil, lol. I just bought two of the 10 gallon and one for the 20 gallon based on your post. The Dollar Almighty made me do it. Sigh. I don't HATE megalomart, I'd just rather see them somehow kept in check but I'm not helping. Then again, if others wanted my money they'd be finding ways to compete on price I suppose. I probably would feel better if I invested some money in Central Garden and Pets stock. They own Petco, Drs Foster and Smith, Aqueon, Marineland, Segrest Farms and I forget what else. If you deal with any of those companies or their products the money is all going back to Central. My real issue I guess is in answering the question do they really care about pets and of course the answer is no, they're a business and they care about profits. Le sigh. Sorry for the rant in the middle of this otherwise wonderful thread.

tl;dr - I saved $$40, yay!
