Mercury has a new home

After treating her for fin rot, I have moved her to the 10 gallon where she can live a less stressed life than in the 36. She is a little out of it right now since she had to be taken out of a large tank and put into a small heated bowl and then back to a tank with all the works. But she is all cured and looks better than she did in the 36. I am at least happy she is feeling and looking better.

After a few hours, she didn't have the stress stripes like she did when in the 36, I think it was because of all the larger fish.

Right now she is hiding in(yes you read it correctly) amongst the marbles that is the substrate. She comes out when there is food but other than that, she is in hiding right now. Is she still getting used to the tank?

yea, it could be that she's used to life in the other tank and is going to have to realize that it's different now for her. when she does, that behavior should stop.

does she show any color loss, stripes, signs of illness or anything? how's her behavior? she's probably pouting or something, but it'd be good to rule out any chance of something that needs a med.

Try her on some VitaChem if nothing else if you can and see if she will snap out of it and freeze dried daphnia is very light food on their tummies when they are going through a change or if they are out of sorts. It is what I give all my little ones when they are not up to par. Nate has recovered quite nicely on it and is just now back to getting a couple of bloodworms once or twice a week to break him in gently to regular betta food. Shock is a funny thing with bettas, they are the worst when it comes to change. They hate to have things change even when it is for the better. Just give her some time and watch her closely and if her color changes or she shows stress signs then she needs to be given some special treatment like the FLBettaCouple say. (but they do pout so she may just be enjoying a good tantrum)

All she is doing is swimming around in a spiral motion or sitting on the bottom.
chickadee - I will try and get some when a parent comes home with a car.

it sounds like she's doing 'laps' and burning off energy and it can be a way of them pouting or getting used to a new home. how's her breathing?

Her breathing is fine. Is there anything I should be worrying about? I checked 4-5 stores in the area and none of them carried Vita-Chem.

I think vitachem is only found at the DFS website, but there are other liquid vitamins out there I believe. If her breathing is normal and she looks normal and doesn't have a bloated belly then i'd be hard pressed to find anything wrong with her other than her reacting to a change in her surroundings. I'd just keep talking to her when you can and coaxing her with her favorite treats.. if she is pouting, that might make her give up the pout and go for the goodies.

Thanks, there are only a few stores I haven't visited and checked out yet.

You probably won't find VitaChem in any store. The company that makes it went out of business over a year ago. The only stock left is being sold in a few online stores until it's gone.  There is a liquid vitamin that has everything VitaChem has and then some: It's called ZOE and is made by Kent. I got my lfs to order some for me as they were all out. The better fish stores might carry this one or you can order online.

Thanks, but she passed on last night. :'( :'( It is really sad, she was a beautiful fish. Now all that are left are the 2 females that eat like there is no tomorrow and I am trying to get a hold of a 5-10 gallon kit. All the petstores that I usually go to and trust are all out at the moment. I will still look for the vitamin for my other fish.

Oh Tom, I am so sorry. I do know how hard it is to lose a little one that you love and I know that you do love your bettas. :'( She will be missed and I hope that you are okay. If you can think of anything I can do for you let me know or PM me. I am sending my deepest sympathies.

Again, I am so sorry she is gone. :'(

If you could try and get me 5-10 gallon tank with everything that 2 female bettas would use and convince my parents to have it in the house, that would be great. I'm just kidding, I am either going to turn the 10 gallon I have into a Betta home or a killifish sanctuary with a peat substrate and all.
Tom

I think I know why Rose and Mercury both died shortly after buying them, they were Walmart rescued fish. The other two fish I saved are not from Walmart and were in a 5 gallon tank.

i'm really sorry she didn't make it. I hate losing a Betta, including ones we've just 'rescued'. we lost 2 of those so far, but 2 others are currently still with us (1 is almost healed up and the other has swim bladder disorder). At least for a time, she had a good home and got to experience a life better than what she'd known before. you did your best for her and gave her that.

So sorry to hear that Mercury passed, Tom. I am sure you did all you could, and you did resuce her for her short life. I am sending good thoughts your way! Val

Thanks. I am trying my best to save the ones in my room alive as long as I can. I think those 2 will turn out better since they love to eat and eating is the best thing they do. I can't think of names for them though. One is a green/blue(depending on light) body and a dark brown head. The other is white like FLBettaCouple's Angel but with red/blue/green fins. Please help me name them.

Maybe some sort of name combo.. like "Fire & Ice" or "Sky & Cloud"?

I don't know about that, they just don't look like a 'Fire & Ice'. But maybe the white one could be called Cloud.

The one I can't find a name for is like the one you have in your avatar. But Aquarius so far is the best name for her.

That's Royell, the one I lost to dropsy soon after I got him. RJ is his name sake and looks just like him. Believe it or not even though it doesn't look like it he was purple with red fins and he had a yellow head. I'm glad you like that name. Nat

P.S Stll thinking of a name for the other one.
