Mechanical Media After Prefilter?

Do you think I would need to use mechanical filter media in a planned SunSun HW-304B even if I used their prefilter, the HW-603? It's basically a minI canister for mechanical filtration prior to the main filter. Would this trap enough debris for me to use the main filter only biologically and chemically?

I also have a really dumb question...
In 3/4" tubing, is the outside or inside diameter 3/4"?

usually outside diameter.

I would use 1 tray of mechanical filter. even if the prefilter was a fine sponge you'd still get some particles inside.

ok so my pre filter slowed the flow down to much to bother using it. but that aside I would still have at least one stage of mechanical filtration as skavatar stated.

What? What does ID mean? Inside? Sorry if this is really obvious.

bobbyta74 , hey there are never dumb questions here!

This forum is a place to share ideas, experience and knowledge to advance our hobby. We can't again knowledge if we don't ask !

As far as I know, measurements of piping and tubing is generally I.D. or inner diameter.

bobbyta74 , in the 1st tray the water hits (bottom tray) I would at least throw down a layer of loose Polyfil or the batting in the bottom of the tray.

Also, there is a void space at the bottom of the canister body, below where the bottom tray sits on a lip.

That space can be filled with bits of cut up foam sponge blocks and/or extra bio-rings.

As the water enters the bottom of the canister, it swirls around as it rises up through the trays.

That void space is a perfect place to throw in some extra media to catch whatever fine muck slipped past your mini-canister pre-filter.

If you can, will you post pics of how the 2 canisters are all set up together.

I am interested in those 603's.

Islandvic Thanks! Those are some great ideas that you have, but it'll probably be several months before I have the money for the 304B itself
I will try though
