I’m sooooooooooooo excited! I have been thinking about getting goldfish and my parents aren’t totally against the idea! I want to keep them in a 90 gallon index pool... it is on Amazon for like 35 dollars! I got this idea from Solid Gold Aquatics... How many goldfish could I put in there do you guys think? I am going to do orandas, butterflys, ryukin... I think most likely butterfly Goldie’s with a few orandas? Would that work? Also can I see pics of u guys goldfish and tanks? Does anyone have an indoor goldfish pond kinda? Thanks!

If you do fancy goldfish I think you could do 6 or 7 max, though 5 would probably be a better number to shoot for.

If Solid Gold Aquatics uses them they're probably great, she's very reputable in the hobby.

Ok thank you! Do you have any goldfish or have had goldfish before? Just wondering what you thought of them... I have heard they are like little water puppies and will beg for food... LOL

Goldfish are wonderful! Love those babies so much, they're my favorite fish.
Definitely water puppies, a little less smart than cichlid water puppies, and they can be a bit of a handful (I trained my common to be hand fed so I could get food to the fancies she's with, but now I can't do tank maintence with her nibbling my hand every second), but overall they're great!
You could definitely do 5-6, possibly more depending on variety and nitrates.
So everyone says not to keep different varieties together, but I've got 6 different types, one of which is a common, and they're all totally fine. That being said, I wouldn't recommend keeping any with eye deformities (telescopes, celestial eyes, demekins, dragon eye orandas, bubble eyes, etc) with normal eye ones (especially orandas, those guys are big and feisty, lol), just because there's a larger risk of damage.

Hello Fish...

I've kept Goldfish tanks for some time and can tell you it will take years for the fish to outgrow a 90 gallon tank. I've raised 19 fry in a 75 gallon tank for two years and the fish have grown steadily, but are still many, many months, if not years away from outgrowing their tank. if you're starting with fry, you could easily have a dozen or more. I'd recommend keeping the Common and Comet species together and keep the Fancies together. I have tanks of both and it's best to keep the fast swimmers like Commons and Comets together. The much slower Fancies should stay together. Or, you risk the faster swimmers getting most of the food and the Fancies go hungry.

if its the 48" X 48" X 12" intex pool, then i'd definitely go with fancies only. Jennie uses 2 large sponge filters in each pool. and keeps 6-8 fancies in each. but hers are larger softball sized.

Ok thanks! I would be getting the little 2 inch ones so how kind do you think it would take for them to outgrow that 90 gallon tank? Will they grow out of it ever? Also can orandas and fancies be together or are the orandas to fast? Another question is how do you train them to eat out of your hands? Thanks!

Orandas are just one of the larger fancy types and tend to be less impaired (unless you have a Yuan Bao Oranda like I do, that dude cannot compete, lol).
If you pick all fancy types (don't do commons, comets, or shubunkins), they won't outgrow it. It takes a ridiculous amount of time for them to grow to their full size, you're looking at a few years.
As for training to eat out of your hand, it's not difficult at all, it's laughably easy. Just hold food pinched between your fingers two days in a row and they're trained forever!

Sure, but they're all nutty!
Charles is the big common, I've had her for 4.5 years, Artemis is the fantail, there's a pic of when I first got her, she was real sick (gills ended up turning dark purple for a while, real bad ammonia/nitrite poisoning, even a vet told me she was going to die), and honestly she's shaping up to be close to show quality, I think I've had her almost a year now. Then I got Pugsy, the little blue Oranda, then I got Haruhiro, the Ranchu, Bubba Whale (short for Bubble Whale) the Yuan Bao Oranda, and Sushi, a Hua Mao Lionhead all at the same time.
(Haruhiro is the dummy who got stuck in my plant bowl)

Lol! Plant bowl, haha. I have heard they can be...well... quite the comedians, let’s say. Haha. Where did you get yours? I was looking at getting mine online bc I didn’t see very many options at my LFS... the other day they had just gotten a new stock tho. There was the funniest little oranda swimming around by himself in a tank...

I have been recommended to the Ifish store but can’t tell if the prices seem too low. The shipping is about $30 though... anyone used this company? Where have you guys got your goldfish from?

I got Charles (common) from the county Fair, Artemis and Pugsy came from PetSmart, though keep in mind that Artemis was on deaths door for a few months, and I got the rest from KingKoiGoldfish.com, very awesome people to work with, I liked the buy 2 get 1 sale, lol. I believe if you get 3 babies (2.75") shipping is only $20, or if you get just one then shipping is $20, otherwise it gets expensive. I'm on the other side of the country from them, so it cost me $60, but it depends on your location.
Real good place to buy bulk good quality fish though, they've got more sales the more you buy.
Course, I would love to buy from zhaosfancies, especially cuz it's like an hour away and they have the most beautiful fish, but those beautiful fish are a lot of $$$$

Has anyone heard any reviews on the ifish store? That’s what I was looking at. The fish are about 5-10$ for little 2” babies. The shipping is about $20...

I got my first goldies a while back too. Unfortunately, my setup probably isn't the best and is going to require very regular water changes. Hoping to move to a new place and upgrade them before too terribly long. Some of Solid Gold's videos have helped me hold out hope for that (love her videos). Orandas are definitely some of my favorites though. I've got two of them, which ironically is all the goldies I have.

This is Smudge when I first got them. Don't know if it's male or female, but I immediately fell in love. Haha.

IMG_20190320_205428963.jpg

Smudge has most definitely improved in appearance since those days (about a month and a half ago). He loves to hang out behind that plant all the time.

IMG_20190420_222231236.jpg

Here's a full tank shot. Unfortunately, like I said, not the best. It's only a 29 gallon.

IMG_20190405_020427137.jpg

Here's my other oranda. He's obviously a male. Developed breeding stars super fast after coming home, but he's still in quarantine.

Ooh! They are so pretty! Love the black one! I was looking at the cutest little oranda at Petsmart the other day. He was so friendly! He would swim up to the glass and just play around while watching you! I wanted to get him LOL...

Ok ifish store looks like my backup place if I don’t find a food selection at my LFS. Also what are good plants for and “indoor pond”? I was thinking some water lettuce?

They'll eat the roots, but those will work! What do you mean by "pond plants"?

Mainly plants that can float... I’m only going to put a couple inches of sand in the bottom for them to dig through so not really plants that need to have firm rooting in the sand. What other decorative ideas could I put in there with clumsy goldfish?
