Martial Artists

So I happen to have a rather large array of hobbies apparently. I am a certified open water SCUBA diver, I will try to track down my videos from Jamaica and upload them. I am a gamer (those of you who have seen me previously on this forum have seen that ) and I am a 2nd-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I teach twice a week in my own branch under my Grand Master. I'm wondering are there any other martial artists out there? What is that you enjoy about your chose art? I don't care what rank you are (you could be a white belt in Judo and just happen to love it) I am curious what people think of their martial arts. Are there any martial arts that you did not enjoy or do not understand? Let's see what everyone else does and I would love to learn more about some of the other arts out there!!!

I was active in Ju-Jutsu and Kobudo between 8 and 16. My mum holds a brown belt in Ju-Jutsu, I was never interested in getting to another belt after the yellow belt, which I only did because it was the least I had to do to stay in the dojo.
Later picked up Medieval Sword fighting with the great sword for a few years between 20 and 24 and learned techniques with ancient (roman and gaulish sword&shield) and early medieval weapons (axe&round shield). Gave it all up completely in 2016, when I left the subculture for good. It was either hobby or job and I decided to get into the master's program in medival studies, so job it is.

Only martial arts i ever did was the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, or MCMAP. Which is mostly about "do this to not die, then make the other person die".

I was instructed in street survival martial arts & baton training in the Police Academy. Many in service training street survival skill classes, and 27 years to put it all to use.

I dabbled when younger. Kenpo, Kempo, boxing, etc.
I'm from the age where Tai Kwon Do has a real bad reputation. When I was dabbling there were a lot of "get your black belt in only 12 seconds!" schools popping up. I don't even know how many brown and black belts attacked me in those days. They all learned that 12 seconds didn't really teach you anything.

I consider dabbling again one day. Maybe once I retire. Maybe Hwa Rang Do or Krav.

There are still a lot of those types of schools around. My branch you don't get that opportunity. I just demoted my own son because he was not abiding by our tenets. We teach bother the physical and the mental side. I went from my blue belt to black belt in about a year (that was actually not that fast according to the Grand Master). I keep trying to teach my students that this is for defense only don't go trying to beat someone up for no reason. When I was in college my Tae Kwon Do instructor used to tell us not to go picking fights because there is always someone more proficient than you are. My Judo instructor used to us to throw them on the ground and get away as fast as you can. Their master used to say 'use the sneaker method' I found that hilarious but accurate!

Yeah it is like I always told people the best thing to have in a fight is a good set of running shoes.

For "how could this go wrong" martial arts, in my area there was a cult martial art. Chung Moo Kwan! 21 martial arts taught as 1! To get your black belt you had to pick a fight with a stranger and beat the day lights out of them. I guess when people came into the place to check it out they would get the daylights beating out of them as an introduction so that "If you sign up with us one day you will be able to do this with other people.". Then there were the stories about the founder/leader/owner that everyone had to believe things like he once ran from St Paul to Duluth and back (~300 miles) in half an hour.
The guy who set it up eventually went to prison and the school shut down. I guess he was also heavy into financial fraud also.

That is just crazy. If I knew someone like that I would never take them on as a student nor would I want to be in that school to be honest. We teach a combination of Tae Kwon Do, Tung Soo Do, and Hapkido because let's face it no single martial art truely covers everything. But still wow that is just crazy.

When I was a heavy drinker I considered aikido as it makes you better at falling down.

As does Judo and Hapkido many of the Asian martial arts are similar to each other just have different names LOL

When i was a kid, we all at least thought we wanted to learn karate, because in the 80s, Karate Kid was about the coolest thing around!

I introduced my son to the movie the original and he was like 'this is dumb there's no action to it' I almost disowned him for that comment.

Make him watch the horrible remake as a punishment.

I did, he loved it -_- (Though I will admit that Jackie Chan made a great Mr. Miagi). It wasn't one of my favorite movies, but he really liked it. Maybe I should disown him LOL
