Marineland Filters & heaters

So what do you guys think of Marineland filters. The ones listed below and other models. I currently have three in functioning full time use. So I was a fan of Marineland but after having two bad filters from them in two days not sure what to think anymore. The filter that was the culprit was the Penguin Biowheel 100. The first one had a terrible growl to it and its replacement was DOA not a thing out of it plug it in and no go.

Penguin Biowheel 100B=100gph
Penguin Biowheel 150=150gph
Penguin Biowheel 200=200gph
Penguin Biowheel 280-280gph
Penguin Biowheel 350=350gph

What about these heaters the stealth got recalled and discontinued. And am currently dealing with a malfunctioning Marineland precision submersible aquarium heater.

Marineland Precision Submersible Aquarium Heater Series.

So after these events I am not sure about Marineland anymore what are your guys thoughts? My first three filters have been great but these last two were total lemons.

I had a Penguin 350 with dual Bio Wheels and hated it! It was extremely noisy. I took it back and exchanged it, thinking it was defective. The 2nd one was very noisy as well. So I sold it to an employee at the fish store for 1/2 of what I paid.

I also had the small bio wheel 150 that came with a 10 gallon aquarium set that I was going to use for a hospital tank. It ALSO was noisy. EVERY time that I cleaned the tank..the filter would NOT start back up unless I disassembled the whole filter and cleaned the impeller and the housing each and every time.

I switched to canister filters after that on the 29g. But on my other 29g, I have an Fluval Aqua Clear. That filter is very quiet and primes easily and quickly. The Bio media is not some stupid wheel that has to turn. That was the other issue...it kept sticking. In the AquaClear, it actually allows for Bio media! No extra parts..just space for Bio, By far a better filter..In my humble little ol' opinion.

There are those that swear by the Penguin..so we must just be getting bad ones. I'll stick to AquaClear if I decide to go with a HOB.

I've switched to the new flat style cobalt heaters. I love those things!

I just bought a preowned 150 gallon tank for African Cichlids...and I painted the background glass from the back,,a satin black. When I put the Cobalt heaters against it..you don't even really notice them..except for a tiny green light. I don't even have to hide them! They blend right into the background...kind of like stealth!

Sounds like a good deal you got there with your heater. it looks good with your added touch.

Update: it took turning my old heater up to 82 Degrees to get my tank up to a decent temp!!!!!!!!

I work at a pet store and have been seeing a huge increase in returns with complaints on them. Common issues with both customers and my own experience are the noise level, the wheel not turning, them not wanting to prime when you start them back up, or an awful grinding sound and an impeller that only wants to turn when you play with the intake tube height. Or just not functioning at all. So disappointing, they were always great filters but they are not made like they used to be. I always recommend Fluval AquaClear anyway, but Marineland was my second suggestion.

I have used Marineland filters for many, many years. Penguin, Emperor, 350 magnum. Never had the slightest problem with them. The last one we bought was around 3 years ago. But their heaters are another issue. I had to stop using them. I had 5 go bad in one year.

It is beginning to sound like Marineland is making the same mistake that many formally great companies have made, making their product as cheaply as posable with no concern for quality. Craftsman tools come to mind.

Currently using three marineland filters all work great my 5 year old Marineland Pro Series Emperor 400 Power Filter it makes some noise but then again how many hours are on it and I never have once take the impeller apart.

And as for heaters I was never really thrilled to have one.
