Marineland Eclipse 37

I just found a Marineland Eclipse 37 gallon aquarium kit on Craigslist for $100. It is the older type with fluorescent lights. The filtering system is in the hood, some sort of of wheel system. It has never had fish in it. The seller says they filled it with water for four days to check for leaks. Purchased about a year ago.

What say you? I have no clue if these systems are any good or not.

Sounds like one of the Penguin filters. Since you have, I'd set it up after a leak test!

Are these usually good systems?

Just to be clear, I haven't purchased the aquarium yet. I wanted to run it past someone more knowledgeable than myself.

Ahhh, okay. If it were me, I wouldn't get it just because I'm not a fan of the built in filters. If it's dirt cheap though...

Any particular reason for not being a fan of the built in filters?

Just because you can't change them if they stop working, or use a different filter if you want. Personal preference. I like being able to move my filters around and take them out or replace them with a different model/brand as I see fit.

I've been reading the reviews on them. Some people say they leak after a while. Some say they are wonderful. But the reviews are all from around 2009.

This unit was purchased originally from a pet store that was closing. It has the florescent lighting, not LED.

Can you replace the lighting?

Are they asking a reasonable amount?

Don't know about replacing the lighting. They are only asking $100 for the setup.

I'd ask them if the lighting is replaceable.

Are you going to get it?

I need to see it first hand before I make the decision. It seems like a good deal and the fellow selling it says he has used the Marineland systems for years with no problems.

I did purchase the system. I have to go back to the seller tomorrow and get a stand for it because the nightstand I was going to use is slightly undersized. I am afraid it will break the tank. But now the planning begins in earnest.
