Marimo moss balls (algae)

I have 5 moss balls they have about doubled in size since I got them.
I read that they should help starve out algae,
But also because they are algae that they spread algae too? So I’m just wondering if anyone has had good luck with them?
Mine do kinda have pieces floating off them now and then and I’ve noticed where they touch glass sometimes spots form.
So I don’t know if they are more harm then good?

Those are pretty big and I think they are a plant not an algae because I never see algae on the sides of my wall get that thick the most it would do it probably spread its leaves to something else and it would grow their making it look like algae for a little
