Male Vs Female In A Community Tank

Hello, I will be getting a betta for a community tank. Itll have 10 neon tetras and one or two nerites in with it. I was thinking of getting a female to try and avoid any aggression, then I realized that females can be pretty aggressive too. I really wanted a fancy plakat, but the fish always come first so I was wondering if it would actually matter if I get a male or a female if it really depends on the fish I pick and since they could both be aggressive/docile

Yea neons are subtropical and betta tropical so along with the temp difference neons tend to nip long fins and too often the betta starts picking them off.

Cardinal tetras look very similar to neons and just a touch bigger. Ember tetras or harlican rasbos seem to be popular and successful as Well.
