Male platy just died right in front of me.

My male platy just died out of nowhere. They've been in the quarantine tank for about a month now. They were all healthy 20 mins ago and I fed them. The male just started twitching and jumping at the surface of the water then starting sinking and it seemed his swim bladder was messed up. He then floated to the bottom and died. In the span of a minute or so. Parameters are
0 ammonia
0 nitrite
15 nitrates

He could’ve choked on a pellet? My betta choked on a grain of sand, and his symptoms were exactly the same. Eventually ending in him passing.

I feed them flakes. Maybe he choked on a flake? I have another thread about the 3 guppies that were also in there and they all died of some bacterial disease so im thinking its come back. I treated with furan 2 twice but I guess that wasn't enough. I'll link the thread.

I feel like they would’ve caught it by now. I bet that he ate to much and the flakes expanded in his stomach. Which probably put to much strain on him and that’s when he started showing signs of an issue?

I agree with jkkgron2. A bacterial infection wouldn't have killed in less than a minute.

They diagnosed it as aeromonas or something like that. I dont know how long it can live without a host or showing symptoms on the host. Im going to keep them in quarantine for 2 more weeks at least.

So in the future is there any way to prevent this?

Soak the flakes in a fish-safe/chemical free container for a few minutes before feeding, then just pour the flakes and water into the tank.

I might have confused you. I put, "They were all healthy 20 mins ago and I fed them," when I meant to put, "They were all healthy 20 mins ago WHEN I fed them." He didn't eat and then start choking I fed them, went to go eat dinner, came back up watched them swim and then the male started losing his balance then like I said he jumped at the top of the water over and over then he fell on his side. It may have still been that he choked on it, or it expanded in his stomach. It sucks fish flakes do that.

I think I understood, I was saying that the flakes may have expanded slowly and now that they had gotten too big, he was starting to show signs of an issue. The flakes could’ve put a lot of stress on him internally and maybe caused something to burst? which could be why he passed so quick.

Okay just making sure. The platies are ready to be added to the main tank, do you think I should wait just in case or I should go ahead and add them?

I would wait a week, just in case it was a non food issue. I doubt it because it was so quick but it is possible.

That's exactly what happened to my newly bought molly. Everyone on here told me it was due to bad water conditions but I knew something was off. Although I didnt feed it before it died.

Yeah I guess it was the food, but I've never seen it before. I had him for a month when this happened so surely it wasn't a disease. The other two platys he was with are in the main tank thriving

I am happy for your other two kids! Well, right now I am busy caring for the babies that my molly left behind. They are 3 weeks today!

And yes, Sorry to hijack your thread Roman but I have a question.
Do you think my filter is too strong for the babies? It provides 8 x filtration. They seem to be doing fine other times but get caught up when they come near the filter output. I have added a plastic bottle on the output and it has considerably reduced the flow. Any chance it may still be too much? They sometimes hide in between plants.

They should be alright as long as it doesn't force them to swim 24/7. All fish will get pushed from the current if they get to close. I wouldn't stress it to much unless it seems to be impeding their movements.

Okay! They have quite some resting spots where they go when they are tired (I suppose). The flow doesn't look too strong for them. Lets see.

It may have been a parasite possibly? This sounds kinda gruesome but when I have a fish die when it was previously young and healthy, I take a scalpel to it to see if there were any internal parasites. Usually parasites leave the body after death, but since you watched it happen and didn't see anything, it would still be in there. Some parasites have to eat their way out of the body when mature and it kills the fish pretty fast, but it's possible the parasite didn't make it out. I autopsy as a protective measure to see if I need to treat my tank to protect its other inhabitants.
