HI guys I've got 2 male swordtail that might be sick I'm not too sure what it is though I've had pretty good luck so far and haven't had any problems with dieases or parasites for a year or so but I noticed about 2 days ago my 1 sword had a piece of the top of his dorsal fin missing I wasn't to worried but I have been keeping an eye on it but then yesterday when I took a look he's got about 3 spots on his tail fin on the top there isn't really any color to them they are slightly white hes still eating and is still very active however both males seem to look slightly paler then nomal I had a look again this morning after I came home from work it's hasn't gotten worse still looks the same but now my other male sword has it on his tail fin too but his fins all seem to be ok no missing pieces of dorsal fin like my other sword ......any advice on what it could be ? I tried to get a pic but he doesn't stay still long enough for the camera to focus properly

HI and welcome to the forum!

What size is your tank and what is the full stocking list? Have they all been in the tank together from the beginning or have any new ones been added recently? How often do you do water changes and how much do you change each time? Do you know what your water parameters are?

It's not a very big tank it's just a start up marltons tank for beginners I've had it for 2 years now I've got 3 kuhlI loaches 1 ansistorus bristle nose 3 rainbow thread 2 male swords and 2 females and 1 albino cory......I've never checked my water parameters to honest I never do because I've never had problems when setting up a tank and adding fish afterwards but before I set any tanks I let it cycle for about a month with the filter on and it's always worked for me I do a 20% water change every week I use aqua safe for the water I do the water changes with

But what is the size of the tank? I tried googling "marltons tank beginners" and the only kit that came up was one with dimensions of about 18" x 8" x 12" which is about 7.5 US gallons. Your tank is terribly overstocked if that's the case and your nitrates, assuming your tank ever was able to cycle with that stock, must be sky high.

You also have some other stocking issues not related to tank size.

There used to be an aquarium volume calculator on the bottom of the page, but in the new format I have no idea where it's got to! Can you post the (approximate dimensions of the tank here or find another calculator? Medication dose calculations often depend on knowing the volume of water you need to treat!
