Male & Female together?

I have a male veiltail and I was wondering if he would fight with a female betta? I have fallen in love with bettas. I so wish I could have a tank full of boys because they're so pretty - but I know that will never happen cause they're vicious little buggers. So what about a girlfriend for my boy Jaws?
I don't want them to fight. I don't necessarily want them to breed either, but if that happens it happens.
So thoughts on getting a female betta? I've never had a female betta before. Where is the best place to get one? I don't know if I want to get bettas from PetCo or PetSmart anymore. Maybe I can get a better ones (color wise) and for sure know it's a girl from a website or something? I don't know.

I wouldn't recommend trying it, as it could possibly turn out badly. You never know what might happen.

 

Unless they are together from the time they are fry, they will probably fight. I keep a male and female in a 10, and they do OK. But, they have been together since they were hatched, and then moved to the 10 when they were about a 1/2".

If you want to keep a sorority of females, 20 gallons is usually the minimum recommended. And, make sure you have plenty of hiding spaces for them. And as with keeping a male with a female, if they grow up together, the chances of it working is better. But, plenty of people have had success doing this without having them as siblings.

 

As a general rule, one should keep males and females separate unless they are for breeding purposes. Of course, there are exceptions.
