I just put my male betta in with my platies (10gal tank) and it worked! there's no nipping /fighting or anything they act as if the other isn't there!

Cool! I'm actually considering putting my docile male betta in my community tank of peaceful fish.

The only thing stopping me is I'm trying to figure out how to make sure the betta gets food when the others are so much faster than he.

Let us know how it goes!

Heh don't be so sure. I had to remove a Betta from my catfish tank cause he wouldn't stop eating their food.

The easiest way to ensure he gets his food is to hand feed him, either with tweezers or your fingers.

lol.. true.. when we had corys, 4 cory cats couldn't get any of their food once the Betta in the tank decided he liked algae wafers.

They seen to eat together fine. The betta finds the food first but the platies get up there as soon as they see him eating

When I first got my male betta about 7 months ago, he was in the community tank with dalmation mollies, serpae tetras, playties and dwarf gourami. He was fine with everyone and no one bothered him but of course the dwarf gourami. That is why I ended up putting the betta in his own ten gal tank.
I think that if you do not have gouramis in your tank, and tiger barbs who can be fin nippers in their own right, you can probably add a betta to your community tank. I had a female in my community tank for awhile as well and she was fine. I was worried tho, about the distance of going up and down a tall tank for air, so I moved her as well to her own tank.
I think there is a lot of fish that bettas can be in with, but a female betta can be in with much more since she doesn't have those long fins to attract fin nippers. I do not think the angelfish and the bettas together are a good choice tho.

What are you feeding? Plats and Bettas need very different diets. Bettas need more meat-based foods while Plats need a veggie-based diet.

I was feeding them their own food BUT the betta would only eat the platties flakes?!?! not his food

Sorry to hear it didn't work out, but I'm very glad to hear you removed him as soon as you saw a problem.
