Malaysian trumpet snails advice

Ok, so I’ve got a tank that I originally put a few Malaysian trumpet snails, bladder snails, and ramshorn snails in. At first the bladder snails and ramshorn snails did really well and they had a good (but still controllable) population, but once the Malaysian trumpet snail picked up quite a bit the other two snail populations dipped off a decent amount. I really like bladder snails and ramshorn snails, so my question here is, could I theoretically take a decent amount of those trumpet snails from my tank and make them their own little species only snail bowl? Would they need a filter or bubbler or anything or would they be ok with just some substrate and maybe some plants in it? Do y’all think the bladder or ramshorn snails population might pick back up with less Malaysian trumpet snails in the tank? Would they basically do ok a their own little ecosphere? Thanks for any help! :)

I think they would be fine with just some substrate and a plant or 2 in another container. I would add a air stone though. Make sure the water stays good for them.

Maybe they have reached a natural balance and if you take out some MTS they will just reproduce again until the same balance is reached. A similar thing happened to me, I added MTS and Ramshorns to my tank when I started it a few years ago. For a while I saw plenty of both types. Now I only see MTS. I don’t know if MTS usually out compete Ramshorns or if every tank is different. It would be interesting to hear from others who have a variety of species in their tanks.

Huh That is really interesting and I’d love to hear other peoples experience with this too. I assumed it must be a food thing and because of how fast they multiply that that was the cause of the smaller amount of other snails. I have bottom feeding fish in the tank though so I’m sort of too worried about accidentally over feeding those guys if I add too much extra food for the snails, so I assume whatever my bottom feeding fish aren’t getting to first, the MTS are getting to before most of the other snails

Snails will need a filter in the same way that fish do. They produce ammonia with their wastes. I find that snails produce more waste than fish of the same size.

I'd suggest going the opposite direction from what you proposed. Take only Ramshorn and Bladder snails out and put them in the new tank. This way you can be assured that the MTS won't pull another overtake move!
