Making repashy properly

The past 2 times i've made repashy community plus it didn't set and was still wet when I tried to cut it. I usually like it to be a firm gel to cut and put in the freezer. Is it possible mine has gone bad (even though it's in a sealed bag) or am I doing something wrong? How do you guys make repashy to where it is like a solid gel texture that doesn't fall apart immediately in the tank?

Maybe if you post the steps you took to make it, we can give some assistance.

I just did it as instructions state, boiled some water and mixed it with the powder and put it in the fridge to set.

It calls for a 1 to 3 ratio doesn't it? Maybe try reducing the water a bit and see if that helps?

Did you make sure the water was boiling? I've found it has to be boiling hot to set. When i'm adding meds, I wait 1 minute while stirring. After 1 minute, it's not boiling hot anymore. Then let sit without disturbing.

I think I mostly do half/half instead of 1:3 amounts. If it ends up being goopy, that's ok because I break up the pieces anyway to feed most of my fish. But for plecos, it's better to have a chunk or to cover driftwood or rocks.

The instructions, at least for 'Morning Wood' (Pleco food)- call for 1/4 cup (2 oz.) of product to 3/4 cup of water. That makes 1 full cup of product. I suppose if it's too goopy, make the ratio 1:2 (product/water) like you said.

I'm curious to know where you, as a Canadian - purchased your Repachy food?
I've looked on Amazon.ca and it's rather expensive.

Lifewithpets can you chime in? I know you use that food based on your videos

I found it at my LFS. 25$ for the 170g (6oz) container. Haven't checked out the amazon prices and the price may have gone up since I got mine. The smaller 85g (3oz) container was 11.99. Expensive, but I don't feed it everyday and for regular fish for an aquarium, it goes a long way. It's nice that you can coat objects like stones and wood to create a more natural algae film and promotes natural grazing habits. The spawn and grow formula is high fat and protein for growing fish and pregnant females. It's all what you need it for, some are quite helpful for specific issues or reasons.

I love Repashy gel food. We feed this to all our fish, snails and shrimp. I do a 3:1 ratio. When it’s mixed I make sure it’s pretty solid right away before waiting for it to set. If it’s not as solid as I‘d like I add more powder till I get the consistency I want.

What do you mean by this pls? I just really want to know! You mean solid = mixed, , or solid = level, not messed with. When I use just 1:3 Repashy/water, it's always pretty runny, do I let it set like that and it will thicken? Or am I doing something wrong?

Once mixed together if it’s not the texture I like I just add more powder to it until it’s firm and then leave it to set.

I literally just ordered some Morning Wood, so I'll let you know how it goes.
Hopefully get it tomorrow or early next week.

This is how I make Repashy:
1.) Measure the amount of powder (3:1) and put aside in the setting container.
2.) Bring a pot of water to a boil on the stove (the microwave doesn't work as well). When the water come to a boil, let it keep going for a couple minutes.
3.) While the heat is still on under the pot (even if you have to pick the pot up), put the amount of water into the premeasured powder. Do this as quickly as possible.
4.) Immediately stir mixture vigorously with a fork until it starts to thicken and there are no lumps.
5.) Let sit out, not in the fridge or freezer. I find it sets better this way, but it may take a few hours to set completely, depending on the amount.
6.) If it still isn't set, don't throw it out. Microwave it for 10-20 seconds and let sit for an hour. Repeat until firm if needed.

I find that making bigger batches is easier than smaller batches.

Thank you for this! Very helpful
The one thing my LFS guy said is it HAS to be boiling water, that it's the biggest, most common mistake made. The bit about letting it sit longer is helpful cuz I'm never sure if it will thicken enough. Now I'll know what to do

If you do mess up, all you have to do is microwave it a bit. No need to throw it out. You could also just make it in the microwave, but my gel is always full of bubbles when I do it that way. It also takes longer.

I usually make it in the evening and let it sit overnight because I can't be bothered to wait on it. As long as the water was at or very close to boiling, it'll firm up well. Agar-agar only forms gel when heated high enough in water. Just adding water will make Repashy soup. Adding powder may absorb some of the water, but it won't gel if it's not hot enough.
