Magnum 350 Biological Filter

Hi,
I've learned a lot from these forums as it is, but just recently I've became a member and could use some advice, so here I am. On my 55gal Freshwater tank I run a Magnum 350. I've learned that these aren't the best to keep up a good biological filter without the bio-wheels (which I do not have), so I do not use carbon, instead I use Fluval ceramic rings to fill the center container and use the blue sleeve filter on the outside of that. Which in my recent experience with it is working well. When I clean the blue filter sleeve and rinse the fluval rings of debris, I'll do it on a day when I do a water change so I can use a 5 gallon bucket of the used aquarium water to dip the container of Fluval rings in and swish around to get out any loose debris but at the same time keep my beneficial bacteria alive.

I've been thinking of using the Fine Polishing filter that comes with the Magnum 350, which I hear should used at least a couple of days for it to be really effective. Now my question with this is, how do I do this without risking losing my beneficial bacteria in the Fluval rings? I thought about maybe putting the Fluval rings container in a bucket of used Aquarium water with a bubbler maybe? But then if I were to do this for a couple a days I'm first not sure if the bacteria would survive and second, my tank my restart its cycle without its biological filter for a couple of days? So would I just put the container of the Fluval ceramic rings in the tank with the fish to save the bacteria over these couple days?

Thanks for any help, and hope this wasn't too difficult to understand.

I have the exact same filter.. with the bio wheel ( which seems to slow down the filter a tad bit) you could put the rings in some sort of mesh bag or nylon bag and hang them in the tank. I personally don't know what the rings your using look like, so I don't know how big they are.. but I can tell you, after my tank was established... running the polisher never messed with the bio chemistry.

EDIT- almost forgot, welcome to fishlore! and another missourian lol. this forum is by far the best ive been a part of, I'm sure you will find answers to all your questions.

Yea, but since you have the bio wheel, using the polisher wouldn't affect your biological filter. But the media container that is in the 350 that is usually filled with carbon I have it packed full of the ceramic rings, i'm just gonna sit that media container in the tank.
