I have a dual bulb T5HO lighting fixture that has a roseate and 6000K bulb. I learned very quickly that this lighting is too intense for my particular planted tank (fixture doesn't work if I remove a bulb), but my attempts to mount the lighting on something in order to raise it up were just blocking my ability to get into the tank if I needed to and I was left having to dismantle the whole setup to get in there.
AlyeskaGirl suggested making a DIY screen diffuser and last night I got down to business. Purchased a roll of flexible fiberglass screen material, cut it to the size of my glass canopy, and discovered that one layer wasn't enough, so I cut a second layer. Laid it right on top of my glass canopy.
I just this week started very small doses of ferts, so hopefully the reduced lighting will be closer to the amount of light my low/med light plants need, and my ferts requirement will be smaller as it goes forward.
