Lyretail Molly

annihilaity

I just purchased this lyretail Molly, and am unable to tell its sex. Its fin seems too fanned out to be a gonopodium but too long/pointed to be a female's, and it isn't attached at the end to its body. Any help is appreciated!

Flowingfins

I think it is a girl but I could be wrong.
He/she is beautiful by the way!

A girl is what I was hoping for, but too beautiful to pass up regardless!

It's difficult to tell for sure from these pictures. I'd try to get some clearer with better lighting when you can.

My best guess is it's a young female. Female lyretail livebearers have elongated analfins and dorsal spiking, and this one isn't actually all that long. A male lyretail's gono will be VERY long, sometimes reaching the ends of their caudal fins, and will lie flat against the body just like a regular gono.

Here are a few. She won't sit still but I turned up the contrast so the fin is more visible. I hope this helps.

Hmm. How big is this fish?

About an inch and a half to the end of her tail

Ah, still very young then. I'm not 100% sure on the growth rate of mollies, but this fish may be yet to sex out.

She's a little larger than the rest of them, who are all obvious. Thanks for your help.

I don't know how it is with mollies, but with swordtails, lyretails become sexually dimorphic much later IME than standard fins. Just food for thought.
