Best treatment I have found is using garlic juice soaked flakes.

will that hurt my other fish? my pleco doesn't eat the flakes, but he eats algae wafers and the other fish nibble on it when I put it in then lose interest. and also will it affect the water quality?

Garlic is good for your fish. Some folks feed garlic daily to their fish to ward off internal parasites.

Buy a small jar of minced garlic and start slowly by soaking some flakes with a few drops of the garlic juice and some tank water. Gradually increase the amount of garlic until you are using pure garlic juice to soak the flakes in. Then start adding a few pieces of the minced garlic. I have heard once they get used to it, they even go for the garlic pieces before eating the flakes! I have also heard it helps repel the ick parasites because the fish reek of garlic.
