Ludwigia Peruensis

Picked up some Ludwigia peruensis from the LFS as I’m trying to add some red to my tank. I was trying to do some research on fertilizer requirements but haven’t found much info.

I’m running a Satellite Freshwater + and Fluval Aquasky about six hours a day on my tank (60 gallon). The Jungle Val grows great as is. I have a root tab under the Ludwigia but was hoping someone could shed some light (no pun intended) on any helpful ferts.

Great write up, thanks for sending it my way! Aquarium fertilixzers have always been kind of a mystery to me and this sets me up with a good starting point. So I am guessing since Ludwigia perusensis is a red leaf plant it needs more iron that other plants. Would the dosing instructions from the EI dosing method be sufficient? My tank is pretty low tech with the two LEDS (that at times can produce a great garden of BBA if I'm not careful), jungle val, anubias, java fern, and then eventually the Ludwigia. I have dosed Excel in the past as well and can do that again.

I think EI would be sufficient, but it doesn’t hurt to dose iron on its own. I haven’t actually found a scientific paper on whether or not red plants actually need more iron, despite it being said so often. In my experience red color is more light dependent.

If plants have red coloration, they need bright light to keep it or they will turn green. It's the plant producing more chlorophyll to compensate for the lower light.

Good to know about the iron-red plant conundrum. So running an Aquasky Led and Satellite + Led I’ve always thought my tank fell within the low to medium range for lighting. Any thoughts on this? I can say that when I first got the lights I had to mess around with timing as I had a bad outbreak of BBA.

Picked up some Seachem Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium this afternoon along with the Peruensis and a red Crypt Wendtii.
