I added some drift wood.

And here are my marauding gang of guppies. I think they're evil. lol

There's 5th little lyre tail in there recovering from fin rot. He's not evil like these 4.

haha, Thanks. I wish.
I bought 2 regular guppies and added them a few days ago. One lyre tails grabbed one of the new guys by his dorsal fin and drug him to the bottom where all 4 proceeded to beat him up. None of that little nip and chase that you'd expect for dominance.
I took the beat up gup out and put him in a q tank. Poor thing went from floating on it's side to lying on the bottom and couldn't use one of his fins and breathing heavy. I thought I was gonna lose him.
After the lyre tails were done with him they went after the other new gup.
Serious fighting going on but he was holding own so I watched for about a 1/2 to an hour and realized it was not going to get better.

Now he's happily residing in the 10 gallon with my serpae.

Thanks for your comments everyone.

Are those reddish fish cherry barbs? I can't tell.

In the 10 gallon on the first page? They're serpae tetras. I lost the neons that were in with them a while ago. There's 2 guppies in with them now.

Lucy your tanks are amazing! Just learned some info also...I am planning my new 55g. I had thought of a bottom full of river rocks (spent hours collecting and boiling). Did I understand right they are hard to vacuum? (don't mean to hijack). Maybe I will do like you did, add gravmel or sand then some rocks on top. I love the plants...are most of them real or artificial? Also...fantastic use of the hurricane lamp (I think that's what it is) sorry to say....gonna steal that idea What is that plant winding around (heater?) in your 30g?

lol Kim, steal away. Yes, it's the top of a hurricane lamp.
They're all fake plants. I recently added java moss to the 30g. I love it.
The 10 gallon with the serpeas has been redecorated, got a nice peice of drift wood and added java moss to that also.

I like the river rock and haven't found it hard to vacuum.
If you put rocks/gravel on top of the sand you'll probably find that they'll make their way to the bottom.

I've been trying to get some good pics of the changes, but my camera stinks. lol

Are all your plants "aquarium" (meaning purchased at LFS) Since we can use rocks from dollar store, could we also use plants? (perhaps a whole new world!!!!)

The plants in the 30 gallon are silk from the dollar store. Just make sure no metal is showing.
The substrate in the 30 gallon is pea gravel from walmart. Something like $3.00 for 50lbs. I had to rinse it a lot but heck, it was worth it.
Aquariums done on the cheap. lol
The other plants are from fish stores.

Awesome! I would never be able to get pea gravel here for that pricet . Is it the stuff you use on driveways or in a garden?

The bag didn't really say but I guess it could be used for either.
You can check places like Lowes and HomeDepot....home improvment stores like that.

As far as scaping goes what you are missing is something low. How about some moss. You can win it on EBay for a few dollars.

Probably similar. I got some at landscapers, 50 for $3, which is a little larger than Wal-Mart's.

I agree
I've added java moss a while ago. Here's a couple of updated pics.

Scarlette' 5 gallon and my 10 gallon with 2 guppies, 4 serpae and a few snails.

what's your secret to finding such good deals? It's pretty cool. You should consider writing a book or something.

Its coming along great

I researched using pea gravel here on the forum and found that a few members have used it. The silk plant idea came from Shawnie and then of course, craig' list helps

Looking good!! I give it a nine.

You just need to move the wood to an angle so that it occupies 1 third or 3 thirds of the tank. Then put something that catches you eye at the end.

Are you dosing with ferts?

No, the only live plant is some java moss. It's really growing well in the 10g.
That tank has snails so the moss is staying there. lol

Are you talking about the drift wood in the 10g? It's kind of wedged in there. I'd love to lie it down but it's taller then the tank is wide.

Great tanks lucy! I was thinking of putting a couple ADF's in my empty ten gallon, but I have a few questions. Was it luck that you ended up with a spawning pair, or is their a way to tell? Also, is the food dish necessary to take care of them? Do you know any good links for ADF info? I'd like to read up on them before I buy any. Thanks in advance.

ADF's are a lot of fun. You could have 4 in a 10g. I'd recommend buying them all at the same time from the same source. They're Q time is at least 2 months because of theChytrid Fungus
Getting a m/f was just luck. I got them when they were small and it's hard to sex them when they're young. Somewhere around here I have a pic that shows the difference between the m/f. If I find it, I'll post it.

You don't need the food dish. When I got my first one I found it easier to keep track of how much he was eating by using the dish.
Now I get a kick out of dropping blood worms down for them and watching them try to snatch them up. They'll forage around and find what they missed. At dinner time they stand on their tippy flippers looking up waiting for the magic food door to open and blood worms to rain down. lol

Here's our African Dwarf Frog Care Guide
