I'm looking for a low growing grass for the front, free swimming area of my freshwater tank. Any suggestions?

Dwarf sag or dwarf chain swords are both low-profile plants that send out runners to carpet the tank. I have both in separate tanks and they grow quite quickly. You can also look into hair grass, though I haven't kept this myself so I can't comment on it.

Dwarf Hair grass is a good carpet plant, but you need high light for this plant. If you have high light and a CO2 system, I suggest looking into HC as a carpet plant.

Welcome to the forum.

What type of lighting do you have? Color temp? How many hours a day are lights on? Do you use ferts or CO2? What fish and inverts are housed in your tank?

The answers to these questions will help the members to offer suggestions that could be successful in your tank.

I have two 24" 24 Watt Aqua-Glo's. Not sure what color temp. Its on 14 hrs per day and I don't use fertilizer of CO2.

Regarding fish, I am busy setting up a tank which is still busy cycling. No inverts. I haven't decided on fish types, but probably will build around loaches at the bottom, school of rainbows and possibly a dwarf ram or angel centerpiece with a middle/upper school of fish - perhaps harlequins.

If your tubes are 24 watt, then you have 20 inch standard fluorescent lighting. Two tubes over a 70G tank is not enough light for even the lowest light carpeting plant.

If you are serious about having a planted tank then you will need to purchase better lighting.
