Losing Red Cherry Shrimps: White line of death

Thanks for mentioning me Thimsel in this post regarding water changes and supporting me in what I do. The food I use and water changes I've done have changed very little in 10 years but I constantly battle trying to educate people as to why this white ring appears, I seem to get more success in converting people to change their feeding program which is as equally important, it makes no difference how well you know your tank if you've not got the basics right expect to loose shrimp

richie.p There is never only one perfect answer or method, I guess. There is no doubt that as a newbie in the hobby, so far this thread helped me to learn a lot thanks to contributions of all of you Thanks to Vinh BettaNgold and everyone else who shared their thoughts even if you disagree with each other But this does not mean it is an end. I will keep sharing my updates and giving you some more headaches until I figure out the main reason, sorry

As a newbie I think its important that you come back here with your success and pitfall its also important that you don't do anything drastic if you get a problem and to take photos of any dead shrimp as close as possible and in the tank, in your early months it's also good practice to monitor your waters perameters as this tells us so much, you will also find methods that suite you and not others so if it works stick with it. Most important keep coming back asking questions, I hope you enjoy your new experiences

An update regarding PH fluctuation:
- At first day, I stopped the air pump sponge filter at night and reduce the surface agitation of lily pipe, and when I tested the next day the morning my Ph was back to 7.4. Throughout the day I tested in the evening and morning, it was 7.4 again. Feohw So, I thought alright, the main reason was the oxygenation as you suspected. In the end, removing cuttlebone possibly could not change the PH in just 1 day, I guess.
- Yesterday, I started the sponge filter again and left it working throughout the day and night, my PH was stable again 7.4.
- Today, in the morning I could not dose Seachem Excel 1ml different from the previous 2 days and the sponge filter was on. In the morning I tested around 10 am, and my ph was 7.4 again, all seems good. Now at 17.00, I just tested my PH and boom! 8.0-8.2 again :/
So only problem here is looking like not dosing Seachem Excel here, does it make sense for you?

I think my system is collapsing :/ After no problems at all for 2 months, everything started to go wrong in 10 days. Everyday I am waking up to a new issue.

Firstly, regarding PH fluctuation:

New issue I mentioned above is the white area appeared on one of my tetras. I will attach the picture from my phone. I searched a bit and please do not tell me that it is "columnaris" :/
. PH fluctuates during the day so be sure to test at the same time everyday.

I found out that some shrimp from another tank parameter. They will get hard time to molt when introduce to new tank with higher GH than the tank they use to live before.I think you should keep your GH down to 6-8 for while if you still have death shrimp ( I think not and maybe your shrimp now already adapt with new water parameter ) The shrimp later on will adapt with new GH and the molt will be easier for them But it take time.

I have tested at the same time next day without making any changes. Then, it was 7.4 instead of 8.0. I do not know, to be honest. I decided to stop monitoring and let everything be

Maybe that was the case, it makes sense. I will let them adapt and not make anymore changes. Trying to monitor and control everything does not really give a piece of mind

I just spoke to my LFS again and confirmed that they have been using %100 RO water in shrimp tanks where as they use %50 RO +%50 tap water for Amano shrimps & fish. As mentioned by Vinh, I think that molting issues were related to difficulties in adaptation to my tap water. As suggested by Richie86, I reduced water changes to 10 Liters (%17.5) and paid attention to matching the temperature, and my last 4 shrimps seem to be surviving since a week. I think this should have helped as well.

I have introduced 6 Amano shrimps to my tank and I hope they will have a higher survivability rate. Next time, I will buy RCS from another store where they live in more harsh habitat conditions, for sure Thanks again for all your kind efforts
