Looking for some new fish: SEMI AGGRESSIVE!

I have a 29 gallon tank and want To add a few more fish, as it seems a little empty. My current roster is:

-1 red tail shark
-6 tiger barbs
-3 blue rams

Before I get the classic response "that's not a comparable combo" or "the tank is too small".....let me set the record straight. My tank is extremely peaceful, with no aggression or nipping a all, besides the occasional bickering between the barbs. My rts has been around for two years and has leveled off at just short of three inches. Each species has its own area, but they often swim and interact together. The rams will even school up with the barbs from time to time.

Any ideas for some new guys? I don't wanna add in too peaceful of fish and mess up the chi... I think something that can hold its own will maintain the balance and respect of is setup. I was thinking of a leopard puffer... And thoughts/experiences?

Any other ideas of cool fish that may work?
I'll put up some pics tomorrow. T

Thanks.

welcome to the forum

Since your shark is stunted, I agree that there's no need to be concerned about getting rid of it.

A puffer isn't a good idea. A classic response, I know, but they are known to take bites out of other fish, which is a little too aggressive for your fish.

I would try a 3 spot gourami and get a few more barbs and call it quits. It's great that you have a balance in the tank, but understand that any changes you make can upset the balance... so don't be hasty.

Hello, I have a semi-aggressive stock of tropical fish. I to would recommend the 3 spot gourami and maybe another tiger barb.

I have three kissing gourami and one is very aggressive because he is the bigger one. So if you get gourami ensure they are about the same size.

Any ideas on bottom feeders? Or Are most too nice?

I'd personally pass on bottom feeders for that tank. If it were larger and more room for them to get away I'd probably say some would be okay but in a 29 there isn't much room to run. I agree to get maybe a 3 spot (as in 1, gouramis can be evil with eachother) gourami and then maybe 2-3 more tiger barbs and call it a day. Or maybe get some albino tiger barbs just to change it up.

I have three blue spot gouramis and no problem with them on the kissing gouramis are fiesty. If you do consider bottom feeders I have African Featherfin Catfish. they are shy and like to be by themselves. They do come out in the evening and morning to feed. they are pricy though.

African featherfin is not appropriate for this tank either. They are not a good choice for most peoples tanks.

a jewel cichlid would add some color and don't get won't get too big but I'm not sure how it will tollerate the rams

I would expect the jewel to dominate the rams.

The rams here are so peaceful. Well I ended up getting a dwarf elephant fish, it hides a Lot then scavengers the bottom. The red tail shark has found a definite home. It seems as tho the bar s have one side and structure while the rams Hav the other.... Although they often school together it's quite funny. I've really noticed the colors coming out on the new rams, everyday they are more colorful

BP are much too big for anything smaller than a 55 gallon. Even a 55 gallon is too small IMO.

Sorry, classic response coming. The tank is too small. I am very saddened that you seem content with the fact that your shark has suffered stunted growth. He should have reached 5-6 inches. This small environment has cramped him to the point that he has reached only half of his expected size.

If you didn't know that before, at least you know it now.

I had a shark that I rehomed to someone with 125 gallon tank, because I wanted him to live a happy and full life. That's what fishkeeping is all about.

I cannot and will not advise any fish for this tank. I just can't. Hope you understand. We're all about the fish here, what they need, not what we want.

Lol you act like the shark is in constant pain because he never grew to be 8 inches long. No fish bothers him in my tank, he has plenty of room to swim, and an excellent cave in which he resides when needed.

No offense, but he would be in pain. If a fish's growth is stunted, usually, it is only the outside that stops growing. The internal organs tend to keep growing and get compressed to the point of actually killing the fish.

I'm not saying you intentionally hurt your fish, but he's not in a perfect environment, and could be suffering for it. Now, he also could have ended up in some 12 year old's never cleaned uncycled 10 gallon tank, and your environment is certainly better than that. But it's not perfect.

That said, they're your fish, to do with as you please.
