Looking for some good fish to swim in the bottom

I have a 29 gallon with 2 guppies (4 inches), 1 dalmation molly (3 inches), and 5 zebra danios (10 inches). I also have 1 frog (2inches). I figure I can still put up to 10 inches of fish in the tank and was wondering what you would recommend? I would like fish that swim in the bottom of the tank, since only the frog is down there (and he hides most of the time anyway). What would you suggest?

My favorites are the cory cats. There are several different types (the pandas are my top fav) so if you are picky about colors there are several to chose from (albino, panda, peppered, etc)

Ditto.

Or maybe a shoal of oto's! You could get a good amount of them... like 5-7ish!

And yet my clown loach thinks it is either a harlequin or a black neon tetra and swims with the rest of my fish.
But, yes, a good fish for the bottom is the cory and oto.

Can you get it some therapy or anything?

I think corys are the best.. loaches and dwarf plecos are also cool and I love otos too (if they can make it past that 1st month).

I'm going to have to look in to a couple of cory's one of these days. Everyone raves about them.

How about a Krib. I have on in my 75 Gallon community tank with danios, tetras, barbs and gouarmis. He leaves all of the other fish alone and just hangs around the bottom going in and out of the plants and a hollowed out piece of driftwood. Plus they are beautiful fish. Check him out.

I have tried. Sadly, no luck yet. It just likes to swim with the others or hide away in a porcelain boat I have.

Corys and otos - without a doubt....Smaller varieties of corys only get to about 2-2.5" in length..Pandas, Adolfoi and Skunks are all cool...So are Peppered...Same with Otos...2-2.5" max....

he is a beautiful fish and sounds like a very good natured krib.

Very nice picture of your krib. I'll have to research him. I don't remember seeing them in any of my lfs when I was looking. Still haven't decided what to get... Thanks!

I have otos and panda corys both, and they're great bottom fish. They're fun to watch in little shoals and make a great bottom cleaning squad. I also plan on getting a couple clown loaches to eat the snails that have cropped up.

Tom - I know you don't have room but loaches, especially Clown Loaches do better in groups. Baring having groups of their own kind they will school with anything that will accept them, sometimes it's pretty funny to watch
Big Al Fishkeeper - a group of three striata loaches, dwarf loaches and even yoyos would be cool in your tank.

I added 3 clown loaches yeasterday and they seem to be adjusting well. It's funny, I have 3 panda corys and they all seem to sort of hang together. At first glance their shape and markings aren't that different. And I've aready seen them lying on their sides... that's pretty weird.
Anyway, I'll have pics soon.

Re: Looking for some good fish to swim in the bottom/Clown Loach

HI everyone, I ended up buying a clown loach. I thought they were recommended here, but now I think you were making comments about them, not necessarily recommending them for me. The pet store information estimated it's full size as up to 7 inches, so I bought one. I went on the clown loach forum, and I see many people disagree with that estimate, and if that is true, my tank will be too small for him (29 gallon). When must I upgrade to a larger tank? If I am to do that, can I add maybe 2 more clown loaches? If I wait to long, will it be a problem to have 1 larger clown loach and then add in 2 new ones (in bigger tank)? I read on one of Carol's posts that in 2 years hers grew to 8 inches. Is this everyone's experience? I'm wondering if they grow according to the tank they are in. I'm loving my clown loach so far, and do not want to return him.

BigAl,

Clown loaches can get huge...up to 12" and really need to be in small groups as well as in a larger tank. A 55 gallon would be an ideal start for them. They can get big pretty fast....The sooner you get him to a larger home with buddies the better.

Totally agree with Vin.
They grow really fast until they reach about six inches and then slow down a bit but their body mass especially needs a lot of room. a 55G is a good place to start and in a group(three or more) display their natural personalities more readily. I lost my big boys when we moved, you can see my new babies and the 75G tank their in in the tank pic board.

LOL! I had the same problem with my loach! After talking to a few people about it someone said maybe getting it some friends to hang out with might make them stick to the bottom and sure enough it cleared his confusion. I got 3 more and seems they like each other!

It's funny how loaches stick together, isnt' it? They just form this brawl, this pack. They kind of pile up on top of each other. I love to see that.
