For the sponge filter, I'd get the biggest one you can stand looking at long term. Are you trying to run both tanks off of one air pump, or are you asking about air pumps for each tank?

I have a 29 that I'm thinking about taking the HOB off and just going full filter on it too. I have one sponge in it with a Aquaneat 2 sponge filter I got from Amazon (I buy 4 packs because I have major MTS). I prefer 2 for the redudancy/etc.

Oh yeah air pumps I have two tetra whispers 60 and love them. If I was you I'd probably step it up to the next one (I think 100).

Ah, I am looking for air pumps for each tank. I'm just looking to add on for redundancy.

I like the sponge filters from Cory You can use one of their air stones inside it, and the bottoms are weighted so they don't try to float when first putting them in the tank. The green plastic also doesn't show algae as quickly as others.

I saw those ones do they hold up pretty well?

I've only been using mine since about the first of this year, but I haven't had any issues so far.

I think I have the Tetra air pump (but it is not a whisper, it is noisy.)
A recommendation I have for this to be concealed is hide it behind a big plant like amazon swords or use little suction cups airline holders to guide the airline under the gravel, then have bubbles come up from there

Alright. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I ended up purchasing the medium sponge filter and a tetra whisper 60. I'll start out with that and see how it goes.

I heard that SeaChem filter works great for 55-gallon tank. Very quiet and the pump doesn't need priming.

I really like the combination of a sponge filter AND a HOB filter. If you use a single sponge filter only and you have to rinse out the debris, you will lose a lot of beneficial bacteria in the process. Of course you can always use two sponge filters so you can clean them one at a time. An air driven sponge filter does not provide the water flow of a HOB filter, so having both is ideal, especially if you already own an HOB.
