Hello, I’m looking to buy some driftwood. My local Petco doesn’t carry it often so that leaves me with EBay I was just wondering if anybody had any other suggestions. I live in the US

Hi welcome to FishLore!!

Do you live near a body of water? You could collect your own.

I do but it’s beginning to freeze here and getting my new tank setup is my winter project. I will definitely do that over the summer. I mainly just need a piece to get some plants started

The water I live by I don’t think has very good water quality and had blue green algae this summer. I wasn’t sure if I could still use the wood I find there

Do you have a local fish store in your area?

I'd guess if you boiled it, it would be ok. I've collected from the river and never knew what the status of the water was. lol
Let's get other opinions though.

Yeah there’s wild wood in my tank it’s completely fine. Just get a hacksaw and try finding some tree roots

If you can, just collect twigs, they work really well. Also, wdym you don’t have a lfs for 6 hours. What city are you in? The only place I could think of that would be like Alaska

Hmmmm...gonna say, i can usually get malaysian driftwood for pretty decent prices at mine. I would think if you could boil it for a few hours you should be able to kill off about anything local. Just better make sure you get some that fits in a pot to boil.

Ok I just wanted to make sure. I’ve read on some articles that you aren’t supposed to do that so I was checking with others. Thank you!!

Bonus points if spouse, partner or parent asks what's cooking!

I live in the middle eastern part of Wyoming in a small town where most pet stores are big box stores or completely aimed toward dogs

Numerous drift wood on line sites.
Look for Manzanita, Malaysian, Mopani or Spiderwood.

I did find a piece at Petco i liked yesterday...which that is rare for me. The local stores i almost always find something i like...at least enough to actually consider it. Price is about the same though, at least around here.

Do you have a reliable site you could suggest to the OP? It might help others who are wondering the same thing as well.

When you get to 50 posts (you're pretty close!) you can use the BSTF section here! I think some people have driftwood for sale.
