Looking For A Fish To Breed

I am currently breeding Guppies in a 20 just as a breading project. I'm looking for a new type of fish (not a livebearer) to start breeding next year. I'm going to sell the guppies to a LFS and use the store credit to get some new fish. What do you guys recommend, I want something different than guppies and slightly more challenging that can breed in a 20 gallon.

Rams or cockatoos could be fun, I’m not sure how difficult cockatoos are though. Pea puffers, killifish, or wild bettas are other options too. Any idea on what kind of fish your looking at breeding?

I was looking at cockatoos and doing some research on the, they do seem fun to breed. I want more of a challenge than just throwing guppies in there and letting them do their thing. I was also looking at killifish, but I have to do some more research on them. How destructive are cockatoos, I've heard cichlids like to "re-scape" their tanks. I'm looking for a type of fish I can breed with just having a 20 long and a 10 tall, that's the equipment I have for the Breeding.

I don’t know how destructive they are, perhaps someone can come on and help with that. I don’t believe they are to bad though, haven’t ever heard much about them with that but could be wrong. Not all cichlids are destructive, just certain types either like the taste of plants or love to move substrate around but I don’t believe rams or cockatoos are like that. If your looking more toward cichlids Shellie’s could be neat as well, but they do enjoy rescaping thins, so just sand and shells for them! There’s also a lot of nano fish that would be fun to breed and a 10 gallon would be more than enough room for them to do that if you want to try two projects.

I breed and keep cockatoos, they aren't destructive at all. They can a little aggressive when breeding or overcrowded but they won't re-scape your tank

All right thanks foe the help, I'll look more into cichlids and some other fish to breed. I've also already bred bettas (last summers project)

I have a pair of Apistogramma macmasteri, (same family as cockatoos) they are not destructive at all. The worst they did was remove all the sand from the pot they chose to breed in. The female dug a pit- but they never uprooted plants or drastically changed the scape.

Convicts are pretty easy. Also bristlenose plecos.

Convicts appear to get aggressive when breeding, if I do will they have trouble with my mochokid catfish that I keep in my tanks (upside down catfish). Will I have to remove these if I decide to breed them?

Yes, convicts can be VERY aggressive especially when breeding. They are very easy to breed but you might have a hard time getting rid of all of the babies if you raise the fry.

I just saw the amount of eggs they lay, wow... just wow haha. Might be better of going for cockatoo's if I do cichlids

Yeah cockatoos are lots of fun! Apistos are by far my favorite fish to keep.
