Hello fams,

I’m planning to start a new aquarium tank this end of year or next year. I’m planning to have schooling fish and dwarf gourami. I have been looking for an affordable 20-25 gallon long tank for awhile but couldn’t find any good one. I don’t one the one that everyone knows about at Petco because I wanna a rimless one. Any recommendations for the tank, light, and hood?

From what I’ve found with a bit of searching there’s the Seaclear tank you can get for about $181 but I’m not sure if that’s low enough for what you’re looking for. It’s probably the cheapest you can get unless you de-rim a tank.

Long, shallow rimless tanks... the ADA shallow tanks or have one custom-build with normal glass for 75-100 bucks by a local supplier.

Light: Twinstar B-line is affordable (don't forget a dimmer, especially with shallow tanks). Given a long tank + dimmer, that's another 75-100 bucks.

Hoods... hate them myself, but if you are going to use a heater, then I would go with a glass cover. You can choose dimensions in a way that the glass rests on your tank, or use standard holders, suitable for 0.25-0.30 inch glass thickness, depending what you choose.

Thank you. That’s a good price because when I look all those $500 pop up. I will look to the one you mentioned

Not sure if we are referring to the same kind of tanks then. ADA is just about the most expensive you can find, but shallow tanks are relatively cheaper, including the ADA tanks, as the glass thickness is less for shallow tanks. The ADA 120F is the largest shallow tank offered by ADA. The length is almost 50 inch, the height is 12 inch. A bit smaller is the 90F shallow tank; 35 inch length and same height. I believe that one is almost 200 bucks....but its ADA :). There are cheaper alternatives I think. And again, custom-build by a local supplier is even cheaper.

Good luck.

How do I find those locals suppliers? I live in south Florida so I’m not sure if I have any around. The most I can spent is $200 or a little more if it is for a good quality tank because I don’t wanna any of fish suffer.

If I google "custom aquarium south florida", I get dozens of hits. Building an aquarium for any of those suppliers is not rocket science. Best to find one you can visit and pick one up, and delivery costs can actually exceed the price of a custom tank (at least here in the Netherlands).

Costs is very dependent on glass thickness. I would not cut costs on this and always go for extra thickness for "psychological reassurance". For 200 USD I would be able to get 40 gallon tank with my local supplier, easily.

Ok I will check on that thank you. Every time I search online, I found a bunch of things that are quite expensive and barely have any reviews. I don’t have a lot of aquarium experiences so I’m not familiar with any brands or suppliers.

OK. The ADA brand is sort off the standard of rimless tanks in aquascaping. Optic white glass; very nicely polished; and glued together in a way that glue is hardly visible. Google ADA aquarium to get an idea. They are also relatively expensive. The quality is one reason; the other is ...well because it's ADA. Also the standard in aquascaping.

But honestly, I own ADA tanks myself, but I like my custom-builds just as much. Once you created a scape, you don't pay attention to the glass quality anymore.

The local supplier where I order my custom-builds has nice showcases as well; tanks that are embedded in walls or have an odd shape; pretty expensive. But I merely ask for a simple, rimless rectangular shape, with specific dimensions, glass thickness and transparent glue; 4 weeks later I can pick it up.

Good luck.
