I have seen in the petsmart, one is called long fin red minor tetra, the other serpae tetra. they are very much alike except one has longer dorsal and ventral fins.

are they same species? seems long fin is called Hyphessobrycon serpae, the other, Hyphessobrycon eques. Can any experts comment on this?

I have three, they seem to be hanging out together....

I am nearly one hundred percent sure that it is just a ling fin variety of a serpae tetra. I have kept a lot of serpae tetras and they tend to get nippy if kept in a group with less than 6 so if you can try and get two or three more.

so for they have got along with my other fishes, two guppies, one molly, 9 neons and 6 cats.
But I agree with you. I got another two long fin red tetras tonight. So have three long fins and two regular ones.

Is anybody else amazed that there's a long finned variety of these notorious fin nippers?

Kind of ionic isn't it.

I had short finned.
Great little fish. Mine were the exception and didn't nip.

The long finned I've seen always seem to have nipped fins.

I rescued a serpae from my buddy after all his other fish died, this guy was a lone survivor. I added a few more so he would have buddies and after I put them in I realized he might be a long fin. He doesn't care though and it was actually pretty cool to see him immediately join their group

P.s. Does tetras look like little piranhas to anyone else?

I have 9 Serpae Tetras. They dart around all day chasing eachother. I do have one smaller one that hasn't grown, he is also lighter in color, probably because he is the low man on the totem pole. His Dorsal fin looks stunted as well. All other fins are fine. He eats, but doesn't carry on like the other Serpaes. He's been like this for a couple of months. BTW, I'm new to this forum. I have a 75 gallon tank. I've had it running for about 6 months. 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and 20-40 Nitrates.
