Lonely Shrimp?

Evening all,

I was wondering if shrimp get lonely for their own kind? Ok maybe lonely is the wrong word. Do they crave the company of other shrimp to be happy?

I have one lone shrimp in my cold water tank with my fish, they all get alone swimming (pun intended ) but of late I've noticed him (the shrimp) hiding more and being a bit more reserved. I was thinking he's wanting another shrimp as a friend?

I've had him three months now and the tank balance is perfect so I'm weary of rocking the boat (another pun intended) by adding another one.

What do you guys think?

Shrimp aren't social so it's probably not lonely, but I do recommend adding more. They will breed, and you can start a small colony. Shrimp have almost no impact on aquariums, so there is no need to worry about rocking the boat. What kind of fish are in this tank? If they are big enough to eat him he could be hiding

What kind of shrimp is it?

Shrimp hide often in the presence of fish, so that may be why it's hiding. But it probably would enjoy more of its kind!

I don't know if they are social or not..................???????

Interesting enough, I have a lone ghost shrimp in my 72 gallon. I got it in November as a hitchhiker and it has grown twice the size and acts like its king of the tank. No one bothers it ( its out all the time looking for food )

I never planned on getting a ghost and probably will not get another one for this tank ( tank currently does NOT have any shrimp in it )

It's an Amano shrimp. No he's out around the fish, they don't bother him at all, they basically ignore him.

I don't want the poor thing to be craving his own kind.

daunicorn they're only minnows and no they don't bother him in the slightest. They basically ignore him all the time and he's been known to join in their games on occasion.

They won't breed as he/she (I don't know what it is I just call him a him) is an Amano and they need salt water for the hatched eggs to become shrimplets

I'd get him a few friends - he'd probably appreciate it.
