I was just wondering how many fish/pet stores to you have to choose from?
We have a pet store chain with fish room that has 4 locations, then a Tropical fish store, 3 other pet stores, 4 Walmart and A Petcetra just opened not long ago. So we have at least 11 that I can think of.

There are about 20-30 different petstores in the entire city and I visit about 10-15 of them on a regular basis.

2 stores that are not chains .
One an hours drive north, the other an hours drive south.

See why I want to open a store?

Ya know we were thinking on doing the same thing someday... a lot of people ask us about fish and tanks stuff. We have lots of pet store but only one Fish store. There was a guy who had his own store but it was more like a hobby out of control he just closed the beginning of the month. He kept every species of cichlid & sold a lot. What he said was: The money he made from the fish, paid to keep the store in power, keeping the tanks up and feeding the fish...there wasn't much money left over.

We do have a lot of access to fish around here but...the quality of the fish is terrible. Tho my Betta seem great...they were in better shape than my last 3.
We always ask where they got the fish from how long they have been in the store...not that we have to anymore. We are there at least 3 times a week lately.
I prefer to buy fish from people on for sale sites or fish societies...we joined ours last year & made a lot of connections. We aren't paying members anymore...we don't even bother with the society. We have made many fish friend who buy trade fish, plants, tanks etc...We only paid $300 for our 120 gallon with stand, canopy and delivery. That was a great deal.

I have 6. 2 Pets at Home's (1 quite close the other about 15 miles away) a lfs within a garden/diy/furniture store which is really good atm (just changed owners) a lfs that is within the grounds of a college but is really good and they all care for the fish, another one that I found today, but I will never go there again because all the animals were in such poor conditions :'( and an lfs I really love but can't go to that often becaus eit's quite far to get to. Its called Pughes (sp?) and its really good. they have this massive saltwater tank in the middle and its amazing + they have loads of fish for sale and they all know their stuff about cycling etc. + they just had a massive extension and now its huge in there! ;D

We have 3 chain stores: 2 Petco and 1 Petsmart

We have 3 fish stores. Well, 2 really. 1 will order anything, but stocks nothing.

and then we have Wally World, err WalMart. LOL On my side of town, WalMart rocks for fish. They carry everything at reasonable prices and their fish are well cared for. I hear tell that is rare, in terms of WalMart anyways.

I hit the big stores for most things, and the smaller ones for particular stuff.

There are 3 in the town -

A pets at home which I only ever visit to buy food from, as other shops don't sell it. The way they treat fish (and customers) is unreal.

Pet Planet where I buy my fish from, although they're not much better than Pets at home. They don't tend to employ people if they have any amount of knowledge about fish though, so the only guide there is as to which fish / how many you should have are the 'warning stickers'. These are pretty useless though, as even some people working there don't know what they mean.

And a small fish shop on the edge of the town centre, where I've been going since I was about 8 years old (previous hamsters, etc.) However, the guy keeps needing to downgrade the shop, as it's too expensive to keep a big one up and running. He can no longer sell fish and the only animals he ever gets are a few hamsters here and there, and he'll buy some in if you ask. I still go in for a chat / advice every now and then, and buy a couple of things.
If that guy could have one of the two bigger stores, the fish would be so well looked after and there would be so many more happy customers. (And I'd have a weekend job!)

There are 6 to 9 in a 40km radius (if you count petstores with a decent fish section). There are 3 or 4 in a 15km radius.

We're quite lucky, I suppose. If only most of them were not desperately rude, uncaring and ignorant.

Sadly there are no local pet stores that I have found close enough for comfort in my area.

Only have the giant mega stores near by.

We may have a lot of stores but the quality of fish in most of those stores are unfortunately isn't alway the best.
Which is why we're hopping to open our own tropical fish speciality store. We only have 1 in our city but it's on the other side of town & you have to pay the bridge toll to get across the bridge to get there. So if we open one on this side of town the people won't have to travel over the bridge to get good quality fish.

3 stores, non chain, 2 of them pretty old, one just a few months old.

City isn't that big, and Florida law won't allow it to get as big as Miami. Even though it's not big, I think it is big. I want to live in a small town of 1,000 oir less lol.

One store is practicly a warehouse full of Saltwater tanks and livestock (not that big, but it's more than most store in the area) and the other one is more Half/half witrh Saltwater and FW.

The newer store is like, 90% Saltwater 10% FW

within a 30 minute drive I have 3 Pet supplies plus, two Petco's, three Petsmarts, one small independent shop (too tiny to really be worth much), and Elmer's Aquarium. So my answer is one and a half.

Well, in my neck of the woods, I have a small non-chain store that carries a decent selection, even a few Discus, but mostly common stuff(guppies, swords...) Although, recently I went in there jsut as he was getting his new stock in and got first pick out of a bunch of beautiful Hi-Fin Lyretail swords.

We also have a Walmart, which is a joke. I wish they didn't even sell fish they are so poorly taken care of. There a dead fish stuck to almost all the filters and floating in every tank. Then they get in fish like "Rope" fish or other weird things that don't belong in most tanks. It's bad news over there.

I usually have to drive about 30 mins to Lafayette, IN to go to either Petsmart(which also has a pretty poor selection) Meijer (which has a better selection, but always seems to put the wrong fish together in a tank, mixing aggresive and peaceful fish) or Aquarium World (which is another mom and pop type store)

Aquarium World has just about everything. They have about a 70-30 split in favor of freshwater. They also take trade-in fish, so many times large angels and oscars that have out grown peoples tanks wind up here. They also have a pleco there that is about 2 feet long (gross!). They have tons of plants too, though I have no luck with live plants. There staff is amazingly knowledgable in both Freshwater and Saltwater setup and maintenance. They also won't sell you a fish that doesn't belong in your tank or that you have no business messing with.

So, I guess I have it better than some people, but it's not the largest amount of stores.

I have countless petcos, petsmarts, and wallmarts in my area (which I try to never go to unless I really have to), and 3 good fish stores that I know of. The only problem is that the one with the best selection has the employees that know the least but I can't complain, cause I know a lot of people that have a hard time finding a fish store at all.

I live about 15 minutes from 2 fairly good sized cities (for iowa that is). So I get a large selection of fish stores. One city has walmart, petland, and 3 small "mom and pop" fish stores, the other city has walmart, petco, petsmart, 1 HUGE fish store, with probably 200 55 gallon tanks of fish (its amazing!), and probably 6 more small fish stores.
I usually go to petland (very knowledgeable staff) or the huge fishstore.

Yeah I'm like lucy. There is a petco about 60 miles from us, takes about 45 min to get there, the closest GOOD fish store about 4-5 hours. which sucks when you can't drive cause nobody wants to take you there. if in a big problem I can go to walmart, about 30mins away.

One Petco and one Petsmart that I know of. The Petsmart has a woman manager of the fish department that really know what she's talking about but they don't sell saltwater. Petco does but they have told people everything from "wait 6 weeks after you put cured live rock and live sand in before you add anything" to "there is no cure for marine velvet you just have let it ride out".

There are three independent shops that have a a lot of knowledge, especially if you talk to the managers (although they really break the rules to a fault sometimes, you know how old dogs get stuck in their ways ). And all of those independent shops are well known for their lack of friendly family customer service... you know cranky old dogs can be
