Okay so basically I’m wanting to start a 29gal clownfish tank and was curious as if I HAVE to have live rock AND live sand. I obviously will do live rock, but do I have to have both? Could I do live rock with regular aquarium sand?
So I can’t use sand that I use for my freshwater tanks? The reason I ask is because I buy it in bulk because I use so much of it and I have ample amounts of that sand lol. Or could I possibly mix it with live sand? If it’s not safe I’ll definitely not use it and buy only live but if that’s one less expense I can save on I’d like toYes you can for clowns. I do recommend a saltwater fish tank based sand though since it will buffer the tank better. Also you will t need too much love rock for fish only. 10-15 lbs or so.
how many lbs of live sand would I need for a 29gal tank? You can go with live rock and something like argonite or mixed substrate that isn't live. Definitely don't do the stuff you would put in your freshwater tanks though. I use Caribsea Live Sand, but that is just because I like the mix of substrate it has and the look.
