i have always wondered this but has anyone used a light fixture for t5s or an led fixture from any home improvements stores to grow plants in their aquarium? convincing my parents to buy me an extremely expensive planted aquarium light online or from anywhere for that matter lol is quite difficult.

You don't need any special lighting to grow plants. Using 6500k CFL or T8 bulbs will grow low light plants very well.

I use a T8 Fixture from Homedepot and a T8 light (meant from planted aquariums) on amazon, cost about $20 total! if you don't have a lid on your tank I suggest buying a fixture a little longer than the tank itself so you can just sit it on top.
