Depends on the substrate, but I'd say 1-1.5 inches minimum. Better to have more.

i am going to have dark/black substrate in the background part of the aquarium... trying to create a little contrast

Amazonia is a great substrate. But it does cost quite a bit. A bag of 9 liters or 22 lbs is $25. Not bad. I have it and it’s very nice.

Flourite is 30 at the local shop for 15lbs so this isn't too bad

The Amazonia light, beyond being lighter in nutrients (doesn’t come with huge ammonia spike as regular Amazonia), is also lighter in color... I really like mine. You can also check out turface (high CEC, smallish grain, no nutritional value, but with root tabs it should be ok for s. Repens)
