I will be setting up a 55 long soon and I was wondering if I would need to have a lid for a cichlid tank?

I would say yes. I've never kept cichlids but all fish jump, especially since cichlids can be aggressive to each other. If one fish is getting chased, it might hit the glass and go straight up, flying out of the tank

Is there a cheaper alternative for a lid? It’s hard to find the right dimensions for that long of a tank only option I had was to get 2 separate lids but it gets pricy

Check your local hardware store or online for

I got full glass tops for my 55 gal. 24$ & free shipping.
enclosed tank will hold heat better as well.
