So today was told one of the weirdest and IMO strangest and lack of knowledge from a LFS worker but apparently HITH is cause by blood worms just thought I would share this with you all

Which has me thinking what's the weirdest myth or bad information you have received from a LFS worker

Clown Loaches need a 3 foot tank.

(Don't worry I bought a 6 foot one and it's just about acceptable - bigger is better)

Also I was once told if my fish are spawning it's a sign of stress and they are unwell.

There are reports / serious suspecions Hexamita is transmitted by tubifex.
So the employee wasn't totally correct, but als not totally wrong.

When I was on Fishnet back in the late 90s, we had an actual fish veterinarian who advised people in our disease forum. She was the chief biologist for the largest fish wholesaler in Florida. Not sure what she is doing currently, but she moved to teaching at a university and served/chaired on several state advisory boards.

Anyway, she checked the blackworms they were using, and actually found Hexamita in them, along with other disease organisms. Blackworms are not the same as Tubifex, BTW. However, many people heard about this and assumed that all Tubificid worms carried Hexamita. Others later checked another source, and found the Blackworms from California were clean, with no parasites. There are a few possible explanations for the difference,

I rarely talk to fish department clerks at stores other than to ask them to catch something, so I don't have any good stories. Most of the shops I go to, they know me already, and sometimes ask me questions when I stop by.

Chromedome52, lets hope the LFS keep asking and learning from you!

The worst piece of advice I received from a LFS worker was to purchase activated carbon as a source of carbon for my plants. ????
