LFS meaning

I was wondering if you guys think LFS means Local Fish Store or Live Fish Store. I have seen some things that say one and some that say both, but I want your opinions. I always read and mean it as Local Fish Store.

I say local fish store. I’ve never heard it called a live fish store.

I think it is overwhelmingly used in the hobby as Local Fish Store, but I understand where the "live" part comes from. In my native tongue LFS are referred to as "aquarium store" because the nomiker Fish Store is universally interpreted as the fishmonger's. Assuming the "live" part is meant to indicate you buy pets there instead of fish meant for human consumption.

 

As opposed to the dead fish store?

In which case, fish market would be correct in the US

 

I don't think i have ever heard LFS referred to for Live Fish Store. But i could see it. Avoid confusion by not calling it a Fish Market in a place with lots of seafood.

Exactly what I was going to say, lol ! I think we can safely eliminate « live fish store » as there is no need to specify the fish are alive...

No one will visit the DFS then.

 

Live fish store sounds like it's live fish for food (fish for food doesn't have to be alive, so it needs to be specified). In the context of fishkeeping, "live fish store" sounds redundant, so I'm definitely reading it as "local".

I also read LFS as "local". But I found this can either mean local as in "non-franchise" or "THE local place to get aquarium supplies, be it chain or small business".

The 1:1 translation from German is a monster: Aquarienfachgeschäft (= specialized aquarium store/shop) or Aquarienfachhandel (= specialized aquarium trader). Sometimes they are called "Zierfischfachgeschäft" (= ornamental fish speacialty store)

Pet stores that sell stuff for all kinds of animals are called "Zoogeschäft" meaning "zoo store". The big franchise stores are referred to by chain and if there is more than one in a city we add the town district.

I think it really depends on the forum you're on. It seems like on this forum it overwhelmingly means Local Fish Store, but I see lots of people use it as live fish store other places. Thanks so much for watching by the way!
