LFS employee intelligence or lack thereof

I do have to give them credit on the clean tanks with no dead fish where we went last night but the employees knowledge left a bit to be desired. As I am picking out my bumblee catfish I see frogs a couple of tanks over. The first thing I say is OH MY Dyed frogs. She says yes aren't they cute. I tell her that they probably were before they were dyed. I asked her had she ever seen a pink or blue frog and then told her the process they went through as well as the dyed fish that they had three of. She really was upset that they went through that and either had no clue or was a very good actress. I don't think it was the latter. When I asked about snails she said that their mystery snails just appear in the tanks they have no clue where they come from. I am biting my tongue at this point. You know how you practically have to sit on the floor in some stores to look really good into the tanks. Well there I sat with this girl telling me about these mystery snails "appearing out of no where". Tommy is standing there looking at me and I know he was waiting for me to open my mouth and tell her that mystery snails did not just appear. He looked like he was about to roll laughing but he didn't say anything either. I do know a bit about "mystery" snails since I raise them and I have read a great deal on nerites because I thought they were nice looking and I wanted some. Not to mention we all know about pond snails and ramshorns, I have to give her one on those two I sometimes think they do come out of nowhere. Still I did not say anything I figured no reason to completely blow her mind all at one time since she really looked upset about the dyed fish and frogs. Maybe next time I'll tell her.

At least you educated her about the frogs! Who knows, maybe she'll complain to management or better yet, customers who want to buy them

The two employees that were there last night are new to me. Usually when I go in there is one girl in there that actually knows what she is talking about.

I was not rude to her or anything I just stated facts. I think they should know what they are selling, know something about it, and also know if it was tortured before it came to their store.

Couldn't' agree more..The main training to sell fish shouldn't be how well you can tie a bag with air in it.

They do need to be more informed but I'm sure they are only getting paid minimum wage and just working for a buck so to speak. I have to admit I have seen some that can't tie a bag with air in it either and they use that stapley thing on their bags...go figure.

Ugh I've seen dyed frogs. When I asked how they got that way the lady said she didn't know, she ordered them like that and thought maybe it was because they were raised in colored water.
She looked like she believed it, that's the sad part.

Good job Sherry. The more people that are aware of how cruel this practice is the better.

It is so sad..So many people buy them because they are appealing for whatever reason without knowing what that poor little frog had to go through...I've seriously been thinking about turning one of my empty 10's into a froggie habitat..lol..I figured Lucy would help me.

The dyed ones I saw were Albino Clawed frogs.

ADF's really are a lot of fun. 4 frogs could happily live in a 10g.
You won't be sorry.

Those are the ones I saw last night. A pink and a blue one. Other than the fact they were dyed I like the frogs. I saw some last weekend that were as big as my hand!!! I had no idea that they got that big. With my fish/snail/shrimp obsession I am having a hard time working frogs into this...Tommy just keeps saying I have enough to take care of. LOL but I like them and they are cute....gimme time I'll get there

I am one of those people that 50% of the time I just say exactly what I think and 50% of the time I might take time to think about it before it comes out...MIGHT. So they will always hear from me whether they want to or not. I know my best friend has wanted to muzzle me before and I am sure Tommy has too he just won't admit it.

Sounds like its time for another tank! Get one while Tommy is out and when he finds it all set up just tell him the Fish Fairy brought it to you so you can save the frogs hehe.

How do they dye them anyway do you have a link handy?

I don't know how they go about it with frogs, this link explains how fish are dyed.

Thanks for the links Lucy. I had heard about the colorings not being natural but I was thinking it was via genetics which isn't so bad imo if it produces healthy fish but the ways listed on those links... there just horrible.

I knew how the fish were dyed so I just imagine that frogs are done pretty much the same way. So that is the story she got was on how fish were dyed.
